Call to Action: Support Restoration of Shoal Creek Trail at Landslide Site

Last week, Shoal Creek Conservancy and Pease Park Conservancy sent a letter to Mayor Watson and City Council urging our leaders to take expeditious action on restoring connectivity to the Shoal Creek Trail at 26th Street. This section of the trail has been blocked by debris from two major landslides that occurred in 2018 and 2019. We are inviting our community to sign onto the letter to show their support for a swift resolution to this long-standing public safety and connectivity issue. Thank you for your support.

Hi neighbors! The Shoal Creek Watershed Action Plan lays out a variety of efforts throughout the watershed that will, over time, help Shoal Creek to become a fishable and swimmable creek once again. This kind of change can only come about with the combined efforts of all sorts of creekside neighbors. With this in mind, we'd like to invite you to our second offering of Shoal Creek Conservancy's Waterwise Landscapes Workshop, which is geared toward residents of the Shoal Creek Watershed! The workshop will be presented by water quality expert Anne Harrison, and will include a tour of Reilly Elementary's rain gardens! We hope you'll join us and/or spread the word to your neighbors about this free workshop, which will be Sunday, April 2nd, 2023, from 4-6 pm. RSVP here

The Shoal Creek Watershed Action Plan is a cooperative project funded in part by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality through a Clean Water Act, Section 319(h) Nonpoint Source Management grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Upcoming Creekside Opportunities

This March we are hosting a riparian restoration workday on Friday the 24th near Shoal Creek Blvd and Gaston Ave. Our focus for this workday will be planting, seeding, and managing ragweed. Spots are limited, so be sure to register here today! Our next volunteer cleanup is on Saturday, April 8th, and we will remove litter and recyclables from the Shoal Creek headwaters and clear the Trail. We'd love to have you, so please register here to join us.

In April join us for a stroll along the Shoal Creek Trail with Katie Ortiz as we discuss all things pollinators while Katie shares her experience as a beekeeper in the greater Austin area. Visit our website for more info and how to register!

The Texas Riparian Association is hosting an Urban Riparian and Stream Restoration Training in the Shoal Creek watershed on April 18th from 9 am - 4:30 pm. While this event has reached capacity, please email alexander.neal@ag.tamu.edu to be put on the waitlist for this upcoming opportunity. To learn more about the topics this training will cover, please view the workshop's agenda here

Please note, masks are optional at our volunteer events and tours. Thank you for your understanding.

Shoal Creek - Water Main Break

The Ins and Outs of
the Austin Water System

Water is an integral part of our daily lives. We use it for a number of reasons ranging from drinking to cleaning to watering our lawns. But, have you ever thought about where this water comes from? Or better yet, where it goes once you've finished using it? We had the opportunity to speak with Joe Smith, a supervising engineer with Austin Water, about how Austin's water system works and future plans for water reuse systems. Read about it in our blog.
