Principal's Update

I had a very excited young man in my office this morning. He came in to share his writing with me. After nearly falling off my chair earlier this morning as thunder crashed down, I was quite excited to have him read his story to me. So, I thought I would share it with you.

I am constantly reminded that our students are brilliant, and that we as teachers have a very special job to grow and nurture these fabulous young minds. I always stand in awe when I realise the amount of learning that takes place in a very short time for our students. When I look at what has been achieved for this particular student in around 1 year at school, it is reason to be proud!

Student Led Goal Setting Meetings
Next week students and teachers will be meeting with the parents to share their learning journeys so far this year. They will compare their goals from term 1 and 2, see how they have fared, and then set new goals for Terms 3 and 4. If you have yet to book a time, please can you contact Christine to do so. A reminder that we do have some evening slots available.

New Faces
This term we welcome Jenn Langridge to our teaching staff. Jenn is teaching in Room 5, with Woodcock Whānau. Jenn has already spread much of her enthusiasm across the classroom, and her students are humming along. Welcome Jenn.
We also have a visitor with us from China. Jin Zhang is currently on a 4 week exchange to experience life in a New Zealand classroom.  Jin is staying with Angela and Rob Gibson, who have kindly offered to host her, and without which this cultural experience for us would not have been possible. Next week Jin will start to share parts of her culture with us, and from what I have seen we are in for a real treat. Her artwork is beautiful.
Building Update
During the holidays we started the process of painting the Technology Room. Much to the dismay of the painters, their first attempt to paint over the crazy crackling did not work. They have come back to strip the paint off and have tried again, but this too did not work, so over the weekend they will attempt a third time to remove the residual paint and prepare the surface for a new lease in life. However, this said, the change does look good so far.

Room 1 also received some TLC over the holidays. We also had the air tested both inside the classroom and the toilet block to ensure that there were no Asbestos particles floating around. I am pleased to confirm that the Room has the all clear and that it is now back in use. Tony and I met with the Ministry of Education regarding the building and we appear to have made some headway into the repair process. Currently we are awaiting word from the Ministry as to the next step in this process. We will update you as soon as we have any further news.

Whānau Time
Whānau time has moved this term to a Friday afternoon. We have been unable to get out to do Sport on a Friday as the field is saturated, hence the change. We really would like to have parents join us for Whānau time, 2pm Friday, as this is an opportunity for our students to share their learning. We are focussing on sharing our writing this term, and from today’s sample, it is going to be really good.

AG Day
Just a gentle reminder that AG Day is on the 15th of October. We will once again be having indoor exhibits and outdoor displays. More information regarding the indoor exhibits will come home with the students next week. Many thanks to Jen Sephton for her amazing ideas – watch this space.

Photography Exhibition
We are urgently seeking images of our local Grandparents from their younger years which we would love to digitally display during our InstaGran exhibition in September.  Please let Theressa know asap if you can help tbutler@ahuroa.school.nz.
