When I was incarcerated without a foreseeable release date...the only thing that I wanted more than to go home is to be welcomed home, when and if I ever got there. Just think about that for a moment... even in my dreams when imagining that I was free and in the world I was used to feeling the weight of the stigma. Even as I played out scenes from a hypothetical release, I understood that there was a whole segment of society that might never be able to see past my past mistakes. Getting released is tough emotionally because it feels like you are constantly bracing yourself for the rejection that you "know" is coming. That's why it is important to welcome people home when they come back from being disconnected from society. And that is why Freedom Project hosts a Welcome Home Celebration...it is a time to celebrate connection, mourn our losses, share a meal, and be together in community.

This event will be co-hosted by InsideOut Toastmasters which is the first Reentry Toastmasters, and all of their talent and inspiration will be on display. We are also proud to say that this event will be catered by MOD pizza, a company that not only has delicious food but also shares our values and passion for second chances.

The Re-entry InsideOut ToastMasters Club is the first in the world.

This is a hub where we come together to develop improving public speaking, communication, and leadership skills. Having this pipeline from the clubs on the inside to a club that is creating a welcoming platform on the outside is very encouraging and even contributes to curbing recidivism.

The club is represent by those who have been impacted by the system and those who advocate deeply about our struggle because they understand that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere..

Our next InsideOut Toastmasters meeting Is Saturday, April 27 at 4:00pm.  We have been invited by the Freedom Project to help celebrate a Welcome Home Ceremony after incarceration, and host our Toastmasters meeting in collaboration. This will bsuch an exceptional event, I encourage all of you to attend.
