Book Expo Australia

Congratulations to the winner of our prize draw from Book Expo Australia, high school librarian Lynette Hodgson. Lynette receives her choice of any 3 of our titles.

The expo didn't draw the crowds that the organisers anticipated, but at Lacuna we viewed it as a valuable trade networking event.

The Last Candles of the NightThe Last Candles of the Night

by Ian Bedford

In Hyderabad in 1948, a love triangle evolves between three young people with conflicting ideals: an Australian schoolteacher, an Indian nationalist and an Indian nationalist revolutionary. The turbulent events of this phase of the struggle for Indian independence come alive and take their toll half a century later in Sydney, 2001 – the year of 'Tampa' in Australia. The Last Candles of the Night is a lyrical and moving tale of the pitfalls of memory and the costs of deep allegiance.

Darling, Impossible!

by Eva Novy

They say the past is another country but for Australian-born Lily the past is another language: Hungarian, the language of her migrant family, the language of secrets. A chance encounter with Eva – the woman Lily remembers fondly from early childhood but is now shunned for reasons kept hidden to Lily – leads to illicit Hungarian lessons in Eva's coffee shop. Between mouthfuls of black forest cake and Hungarian poetry, Lily learns more than she signed up for.

Praise for This Freshest Hell

"This Freshest Hell by Natasha Ewendt is like two books in one. The first part covers about 12 years in  Maggie and Lily’s life and the second part is their life as vampires. … Because the first part of the book made you care so much about these characters it made the part where they became vampires that much better. … The main idea for this book though wasn’t that this is a vampire novel but instead it was a book about two girls finding their way in life and Natasha Ewendt did a good job of getting the point across. This Freshest Hell shows that books about vampires will never get old as long as they can make you care about the characters."
