What's on Your Playlist?

One of my clients works in finance and is launching a big venture -- it's his exciting, next professional step. In a recent coaching session, we discussed plans for his new company's website, mission, and timeline. Then I asked, "If your new company had a playlist, what songs would it include?"

Thinking about that made him smile.

As a coach, my role is to help leaders and teams think in new ways and from innovative perspectives. Asking ourselves creative questions about our life and goals creates new brain pathways and insights, opening up new opportunities. In addition to helping us think more expansively, coaching is an opportunity for fun. Too often, when we think about our professional goals, it can feel overwhelming and pressured.

Here's where songs and music come in. Thinking about questions like "What's your theme song for the next chapter of your life?" or "What would your organization's playlist be?" invite our brains to be playful, creative, and imaginative. They invite in new brain connections.

Music is powerful. It can brighten our mood, get us moving, and connect us to fond memories. It's also beneficial for our thinking;
research has shown that listening to music we like is good for our brain. When we listen to our favorite songs, the network that is connected to dreaming, empathy, and self-awareness -- called the default mode network -- is most active. An active default mode gets us out of the weeds and into the big picture.

So, what would be on your personal playlist?
What's your organization's theme song?

As you answer these questions, give yourself permission to be playful and think about your career and leadership from a totally different perspective.

Want some inspiration to get started?

I asked my husband, whose company is dedicated to finding treatments for ALS, for his theme song. A usually serious scientist, he immediately responded: I Want a New Drug by Huey Lewis and the News.

If I were going to create an official playlist for Deb Elbaum Coaching, one song that must be included is I Was Here by Beyoncé. It brings tears to my eyes every time I watch the video. If you want a reminder that your life matters, watch it now.

Two other favorite mood-shifting, empowering songs that would top my list are these:
Brave by Sara Bareilles
Bright Side of the Road by Van Morrison

And, just for fun, I would add a song that makes me sing and dance in my car, like I Love Rock 'N' Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

I'd love to hear from you. What would be on your playlist?

Take care and have a great month,
Deb
