ST. ILLUMINATOR'S WEEKLY NEWS
SEMINAR FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS

On Saturday, March 21, St. Illuminator’s Cathedral hosted a Sunday School Teachers’ seminar, sponsored by the Prelacy’s Armenian Religious Education Council (AREC). The seminar was conducted by Deacon Shant Kazanjian, Director of AREC.

“Saints” was the overall theme for the seminar, in light of the canonization of the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide, which will take place on April 23. Dn. Shant first focused on the notion of the holy (soorp) in the Bible, holy God and his holy people, just to ground the discussion in the holy scriptures, the primary source of our faith. In the New Testament, “saints” or “holy ones” is a common designation for the people of God, the living members of the Church. In the afternoon, the discussion shifted from the living Christians to the departed Christians in general and the “Saints” as a special class of the departed Christians. The participants engaged in a number of activities to explore various aspects of the topic, activities that could easily be adopted and adapted for Sunday School classes. Dn. Shant entertained a host of questions from the participants related to the whole issue of the canonization of the Armenian Martyrs.

"HOLY MYSTERY OF THE MARTYRS" PERFORMED IN NEW YORK

St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral hosted a concert featuring Alan Hovhaness’s “Holy Mystery of the Martyrs” on Friday, March 20. The Rev. Fr. Hovhan Khoja-Eynatyan, pastor of St. James Church of Evanston, IL, was the guest soloist. He was accompanied by cellist David Bakamjian and violinists Nurit Pacht, Sebu Sirinian, and Kimberly Foster.

“Holy Mystery of the Martyrs” was commissioned by the Eastern Diocese and composed by Alan Hovhaness in 1976. The “holy martyrs” of the title are the Armenian Christians killed on the field of Avarayr in 451 A.D. In its 17 movements, “Holy Mystery of the Martyrs” presents individual “prayers” that convey both the tragedy of loss and the triumph of survival. The March 20 concert was dedicated to the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

 PALM SUNDAY
THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (20:29-21:17)

As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.  There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!”  The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!”  Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?:  They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.”  Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes.  Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.
When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, -“Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”    The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them: They brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, - Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Then Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who were selling  and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.  He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayers’ but you are  making it a den of robbers.”
The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he cured them. But when the chief priests  scribes saw the amazing things that he did, and heard the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became angry and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise for yourself?”   He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.
