I discovered this beautiful painting (The Ancestors) during my image gathering quest. The artist is Sarrita King from Adelaide.

What drew my attention, besides the beautiful Earth tones, is the wisps of Ancestors...for I see here the rich imprint of those who have come before us. It is a reminder that we, in our lifetimes, are merely short term caretakers of this beautiful world and that we should leave behind our legacy in a positive manner.

Do visit Sarrita's work as her paintings are profoundly beautiful and connected to both Spirit and are expressions from her Soul.

Earth--The Element of Home

The Earth Mother opens her arms....

The Earth is such an important part of us; she is our Mother and brings to us such profound gifts. We began from her and in time,we shall reunite with her and become part of her in the form of dust. This is our evolution.

The Earth Mother provides us with our home, our anchoring.

She suffers along with us. She celebrates with us.

She is neglected, abused, loved, ignored, blessed, scarred, sometimes considered, sometimes not; she brings us substance and supports us, takes our troubles, absorbs our excrement; she is carved and molded to suit man's needs...she yields and adapts, sometimes she does as she needs to, or wants to. Sometimes this does not fit into the desires of man, but that is because man believes he should rule over anything and everything and should always have the final say.

She speaks in a myriad of ways. Do we listen?

We close our classes with a Navaho prayer, Walking in Beauty. I share this and absorb with the grace and thirst of the Earth.

In beauty I walk
With beauty before me I walk
With beauty behind me I walk
With beauty above me I walk
With beauty around me I walk
It has become beauty again

Today I will walk out; today everything negative will leave me
I will be as I was before; I will have a cool breeze over my body.
I will have a light body; I will be happy forever, nothing will hinder me.

I walk with beauty before me.
I walk with beauty behind me.
I walk with beauty below me.
I walk with beauty above me.
I walk with beauty around me.
My words will be beautiful.

In beauty all day long may I walk.
Through the returning seasons, may I walk.
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk.
With dew about my feet, may I walk.
With beauty before me may I walk.
With beauty behind me may I walk.
With beauty below me may I walk.
With beauty above me may I walk.
With beauty all around me may I walk.

In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk.

In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, living again, may I walk.
My words will be beautiful.

The Great Spirit is our father, but the Earth is our mother. She nourishes us; that which we put into the ground she returns to us, and healing plants she gives us likewise. If we are wounded, we go to our mother and seek to lay the wounded part against her, to be healed.

Food for Thought:
Your relationship with the Earth and the Earth Mother.

Mother Nature is not for us she is part of us and we, like everything else that lives and breathes upon her, are her children. Your own, direct connection with Mother Earth is to be encouraged daily. Paint her portraits, swim in her waters, tend to her flowers, stroll through her glorious forests, and care for her many children: all plants, people, and animals. We must live according to her principles and choose not to pollute her body. The alternative is death to our mother— and death to her children.

This lends itself to some Food for Thought...
  • How aware are you of your footsteps and upon that which you tread?
  • When you look down at the Earth, what color do you see?
  • If you were to close you eyes and see the Earth, what color do you see? Is it different? Why do you think that is?
  • When was the last time you sat on the Earth and felt her heartbeat?
  • Take some time and sit with you back to a tree. Ask the Earth Mother, “What can I do for you?” Listen, feel and then enact or follow her instruction. Can it be done alone? Do you need help from others? If so, let us know!
  • What can you do to honor the Earth Mother?
  • When was the last time you littered?
  • When was the last time you cleaned the Earth Mother? What did you do to the refuse? Did it go into a proper bin (recycle/compost) or did you push it out of sight unto the street?
  • What is the difference between the dirt on your floor and the dirt beneath a tree?
  • When was the last time you wrote your name in the dirt or created a mud pie?
  • When was the last time you shed a tear and watched it disappear into the Earth? If you were to do so right now, what would grow from it? How “positive” is it? How “negative is it”? What is the antithesis (opposite) of it?
  • Can you dedicate “One Act of Kindness” everyday to the Earth Mother? What would it be?

Remember always: We are Children of the Earth. We are her caretakers, her Guardians.

Step gently and with Love in the soles of your feet, blessing the Earth with each footstep. Lift your hands and send blessings for all that is.

Musical Link of the Month

Neelam and I were honored a couple of years ago when one of our dear students, Shivani Vaswani, returned from a journey in our class with a Power Song. Her inspiration: The Earth Mother.

Shivani sang this to the class, her voice filling the room. As her voice wove around and through us, I closed my eyes, carried into the special place where the Earth Mother resides. In this song are the reciprocative gifts of healing for, and from, the Earth.

I am deeply touched and honored to have witnessed her song. This is very much, a gift to us and to the Earth, a gift from this talented womans Heart and Soul.

Thank you Shivani!

Journey on it!
The Equinox: A Day of Equity and Transition

On September 23, we (in the Northern Hemisphere) will enter the Autumnal Equinox. This is a beautiful time of transition (and as our students can attest, transition is the Best Friend of Shamanic Practitioners and all our Phoenix Students!).

For our practitioners, Journey to the Spirit of this Equinox. Ask it what gifts it brings to you. Ask what can you do to honor it. Ask for it to give you a ritual that you can do that will bring its Power into and through you, so you can in turn, give it to the World.

Remember, the work we do is Us, the BIG US, as in for one and all.

For our Phoenix students, allow your psyche to reveal to you that which you need to release at this time of your life. Look at the past wounds and states of consciousness that are anchoring you and that are not allowing you to fully move forward to creating new dreams and a new life for yourself and the planet. The Journey of the Self and Spirit would be very good for this.

Find a tree that calls to you, and sit with it for awhile. As you sit with it and align your breath and heartbeat with both the tree and the earth. Feel your own heart beating. Focus on your desire to let go of what no longer serves you.

When you feel ready, imagine kneeling on the ground and digging a hole in the Earth; imagine burying what needs release into the Earth.

AS you do so, remember to thank it for the lesson(s) and send it away with Love.

Thank the Earth for taking this. Ask that it be composted and transformed into rich earth that creates a fertile environment for the planting of new seeds of hope, light, and love. the desire to let go of what no longer serves you.
For our Phoenix Risers...

As the seasons change, this is a wonderful time to dip your toes into your River and thank it for the changes you have made over the Summer. As you do so, place your hands on the Earth and thank her for anchoring you and for allowing your roots to reach out as you have risen like the Phoenix. Don't forget to take the Inner Child with you!

From the Storyteller is wonderful that you are here...

We have been around the Wheel and have spoken about all the Elements...the Air...the Water...Fire and now today, The Earth.

There is much written here today. That is because there is much to say.

We need all the Elements to live. Now, I speak of that which gives us our home, our us the plants we need to survive and eat and to heal. This is not a small thing. This is Everything and therefore, so is the Earth.

When we visit our mothers, we bring something with us. We do this is out of respect and Love. We do not go empty handed. Even if we have nothing to give, we can always bring our Love, our embrace, our smile, our kind words and loving actions. These things we can give to the Earth Mother too. She is not picky. She will welcome the attention, the thought, the intention behind these things.

Treat the Earth Mother with Love. Be respectful of her.

Correct the actions of others. If you see something on the ground that has not come from the Earth Mother, then pick it up. Put it somewhere a safe place that it can become something else. Do not leave it on the ground, or in a tree. Remember, all these things are not things. They are all alive. They all have Spirit and Feelings. Would you want something covering your face or mouth all day, keeping you from breathing the fresh air or feeling the warmth of the Sun?

Rest upon the Earth Mother....feel her heartbeat...feel her cradle you as one of her children...allow her to nurture you and take away that which troubles you. This makes her feel good.

Likewise, care for her as she does you....

Send prayers to her; apologize for that which man has done to her over the course of years. Send prayers to the negligent ways of us, the two legged.

Animals do not abuse our Mother as the human will.

Teach our Brothers and Sisters, teach our Children of this. Become the model for others; let them see, by your actions, the Way of the Earth and the way of respect her. Plant these seeds within you so others can see what grows.

Walk lightly and leave gentle marks upon this land. Know that the Earth Mother is always with you, always there to help and mend, nurture and support.

Where ever you are, you are always home because She is always there.
