Our 6th year: Dates for our 2017 Summer Program!

Empower Spinal Cord Injury, Inc. is looking forward to our 2017 two week Summer Program! We thank Stony Brook University in advance for continuing our relationship and allowing us to call their campus home for the full two weeks in July!  The Summer Program will run July 16-29, 2017, and during those 2 weeks we will change the lives of 12 people living with spinal cord injuries.

The cost of the program remains $2500, and scholarships will continue to be available.  This year our applications will be rolling, with one deadline of May 15th and we will notify participants of their status by June 1st.  With this new application process, we encourage applicants to start fundraising as soon as they have submitted their application. We hope this year will be our best and include new education topics, therapeutic interventions, and recreational activities to maximize everyone’s experience at Empower SCI.

Participant and Volunteer applications are posted on the website. We hope you will join us for the last few weeks of our recruitment process, both for participants and volunteers.  We are incredibly excited for the growth of our program and we cannot thank you enough for your support along the way!

2016 Fall/Winter Recap
Empower SCI has been busy educating, celebrating, and raising money over the last 6 months!

5 Year Celebration, Reunion, and Biggest Empower SCI Fundraiser to date!

This year we reached an incredible milestone of helping people living with spinal cord injuries live happier, healthier and more independent lives for FIVE years!  One of Empower SCI’s original goals was to assure that Empower SCI is sustainable, and hitting the 5 year mark has allowed us to meet that short term goal.  We have had 5 summer programs, 5 years of fundraising, and 5 years of reaching improving wheelchair skills in community wheelchair-users.  This was something well worth celebrating!

Fast forward to November 12, 2016: Over 170 people who have loved and supported Empower SCI over the 5 years came together at the Downtown Marriott in Providence, Rhode Island.  Led by Co-Founded Elizabeth Lima Remillard, Empower SCI hosted our largest and most successful fundraiser in Empower’s history, raising over $10,000 dollars!  Participants, volunteers, family members, and friends all dressed up and put on their dancing shoes for an Empower SCI Gala.  We savored delicious food, danced to our own beat, embraced old friends and laughed our way through the night!  We have a huge list of thank you’s for this event’s success.  Thank you to the Providence Marriott for hosting us and treating us with such wonderful hospitality. Thank you to Northwell Health Rehabilitation Network for event sponsorship.  Thank you to Nancy McHugo, Jessica Goodine’s (Empower SCI founder) mother, for her creative mind and endless hours of dedication to provide the most beautiful decorations and ambiance for what felt like a red carpet event! Thank you to Matt Raposa, the DJ from Luke Renchan Entertainment, and to Marilyn Wilbur, our dance teacher for setting the stage for hours of dancing the night away.  Thank you to the volunteers: Gary Powers, Janice Powers, Paul Cavalloro, Denise Cavalloro, Ron Fortin, Terry Fortin, Gary LeFrancois, Dina Sears, Matt Vieira, and Brittany Enright for donating their time to help this event run smoothly.  We are also immensely grateful to the Providence College Men’s Basketball team, the NYLO hotel, Bom Bom Rum, Revival Brewing Company, Artworks of Tucson, Boston Duck Boat Tours, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Blue Fish Grille, Tel Aviv Restaurant, Keurig, Spinergy, Sue Gibree, Cristina Flecher, Leodina Lima, Melissa Couto, Darrick Tow, Cristina Gatta, Mike Tisser, Joanne Cesiro, Christopher Bouwer, Jennifer Cote, Clare Emmert, and Erin Bean for donating items to our Gold and Diamond Raffle. Lastly we need to thank our Co-Founder Elizabeth Lima Remillard, for the endless phone calls, meetings, and organization! This event would not have happened if it wasn’t for her and her endless devotion to Empower SCI.

Rolling Rolling Rolling...Keep Those Cycles Rollin!

Empower SCI was successful again this fall in running its second annual Knobby Tire Mountain Bike event for all abilities on September 24th, 2016.  A team headed by our Empower SCI Presents and Co-Founder, Carrie Callahan, started planning for Knobby Tire 2016, the day after Knobby Tire 2015 was completed and this year Empower SCI was able to reach over 50 people and spread the word about adaptive cycling!

Thank you to our donors NuMotion and Hub Cycle for sponsoring our 2016 Knobby Tire baseball T’s and to all of our raffle ticket donors; this year we were able to raise close to $2000 with admission and raffle sales.   Thanks to the vendors that participated in the day and brought their equipment and knowledge to the event: Northeast Passage, DCR Universal Access, Bike-On and Cycle Loft, who was set up for technical support- Thanks Jerry!  Thank you to our lead riders, Ed Amo, Alexis Wruble, Lauren Kling and Sean Casey, who brought our participants on the trails of Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle, MA.  Lastly, we need to thank Ryan DeRoche, Kelly Spellman, Zoe Norcross, and Amy Fleischer for your dedication to this fun-filled Empower event.  Mark your calendars now for our 2017 Knobby Tire Ride and Roll, which will be held at Great Brook Farm State Park on Sunday September 24th

Endless Abilities to Reach Community Wheelchair Users and Students!

On October 15th, Empower SCI hosted our 5th annual community Wheelchair Skills Clinic and the third annual Tufts University Classroom-based Wheelchair Skills Clinic.  This clinic targets community wheelchair users AND Tufts University Occupational Therapy students.  In these clinics students and wheelchair users learn the importance of proper wheelchair setup and mechanics to promote excellent advanced wheelchair skills, followed by hands-on real life practice performing these skills and teaching these skills in manual wheelchairs.  By the end of these clinics people are managing ramps, curbs and maintaining functional wheelies for minutes at a time!  Thank you to Tufts University and Jessica Harney for allowing us to share this information with your students and our community wheelchair users!

This fall and winter, Empower SCI was again able to reach the greater Boston and greater Washington D.C. community members at their designated Abilities Expos!  This is Empower’s 5th year at the Boston Abilities Expo and the 2nd year in Washington D.C., teaching advanced wheelchair skills to all ages and promoting our program to future participants and possible volunteers.  We want to thank Abilities Expo’s for continuing to provide us this opportunity to support communities and their wheelchair users. Lastly, thank you to our volunteers for donating their weekends to share their endless knowledge and passion for Empower SCI.  We need to give Jonathan Martel a special thank you for being our designated Wheelchair Skills representative at all Expos and clinics along the east coast; your commitment to teaching advanced wheelchair skills to anyone and everyone who is interested demonstrates your unparalleled devotion to the community’s wheelchair users and Empower SCI.  Empower SCI will be back at the Abilities Expo New York for more wheelchair skills on May 5-7, 2017 at the New Jersey Expo Center!

Please contact Jonathan Martel at  jonathancmartel@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering at the Abilities Expo event!
