Supporting Mob to turn things around

We recently spoke to Dewayne from EveryMan's Indigenous Support and Accommodation program about some of the hurdles that his clients face, including family violence, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health challenges and homelessness.
The Indigenous Support and Accommodation program assists Indigenous families and individuals at risk of homelessness or needing support while undertaking education or medical treatment or starting employment. The service is not limited to these areas and the ISA team go above and beyond to support anyone that needs help.

Alyssa talks to EveryMan about the struggles she faced after a relationship breakdown. When she reached out for help, fearing for her children's wellbeing during this time, she was turned away by the system that promises to help people in times of need. Alyssa highlights the faults that the health system presents systemically when it comes to assisting people who are having challenges with their mental health.
If you are not receiving the response you think you need, or a service provider isn’t the right fit for you - keep trying! Finding the right approach doesn’t always happen in the first instance, but that doesn’t mean the right service for you isn’t out there. Don’t give up getting the help you deserve.

Good bye Russell

A few weeks ago, EveryMan said a sad goodbye to Russell, who had been living in our Men's Accommodation and Support Services program since 2007.
There are very few of us at EveryMan who can say that they hadn’t shared a moment or two with him over the years, whether you were working with him directly or just having a quick chat in the hall as you pass by. He would always be there smiling back at you.
The people who knew him at EveryMan agreed that we would plant a tree in the courtyard near his home for his community to remember and remain connected with him. We weren't sure on the day if anyone was even going to attend and thought it would probably be just us two digging a hole on our own, but the response we received truly blew us away. People from all aspects of his life, whether they be an allied health professional who had worked closely with him over the years or members of his direct community, all attended in support. The residents picked out a spot that they wanted for the tree and got to work. And soon we had a memorial garden that will hopefully grow tall and provide a place to sit and reminisce for the people who knew him the best and for all future residence to enjoy.
Thanks, everyone who made this possible and showed up to give him the best send-off we possibly could. We couldn’t be prouder to be considered a part of this community and it was a real privilege to be able to share this moment with you all.

EveryMan Indigenous Support and Accommodation program

EveryMan helps Indigenous families who are at risk of homelessness to obtain temporary, shared or permanent accommodation. We also offer support with Centrelink, legal matters, referrals to culturally appropriate services, and advocacy on behalf of clients. We assist individuals and families with improved access to health, education, legal matters, and government services. Outreach support is available for individuals and families at risk of homelessness because their living circumstances are unsustainable, or they are about to return to the ACT and have no accommodation.
