OTHER DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
Stan Hansell, who organised a young people's organ day in February reports back: "The Peterborough cathedral event on Friday afternoon of 16th February went very well and all 8 places were filled. Students were mostly from secondary schools in the city although one was home tutored and was only 10 yrs old. Almost all had never touched a pipe organ before and their piano grades varied from grade 4 to 8.

David Humphries, Cathedral Organist, provided a brilliant introduction and had taken the time to set up a large screen so that we could not only watch him play, but we could also see the students. Our pianists were very nervous before they mounted the stairs, mostly two at a time, to the organ loft. Each pair of students received help from David for twenty five minutes.

There were other activities, too, for students who were either waiting to ascend or had already been: Stephen Hession took sessions on the cathedral chamber organ demonstrating how necessary it is to develop a good legato touch, while Stan took a session on simple organ improvisation, but using a number of electronic keyboards.

We are very grateful for the funding provided by the Peterborough Music Hub to make this possible, and its director,Michael Cross; we are also grateful to the cathedral dean and chapter and director of music who allowed us to host this event."
