NAS U9 Boys Cricket vs Repton School
NAS 205-5 : 264-2 Repton

Wednesday 11th May 2016

On Wednesday afternoon the NAS U9 cricket team travelled to Repton School in their final DASSA cricket fixture of the season.  After a great win at home to WEK a fortnight ago, the boys were looking forward to their final game of the season against a tough Repton side.

With NAS losing the toss and being forced to bat, they started well with captain Archie Triplow (4A) and Arjun Nanda (4C) starting well at the crease. Zain Huda (4A) and James White (4B) continued this until a few costly wickets in the final few over in the game put NAS on the back foot and left them with it all to do with the ball.

When bowling, Dominic Lunjevich (4A) started well with plenty of accuracy and length to keep the Repton batters on their toes. Sumair Kandhari (3E) continued this until a few costly wide balls added to Repton’s total in the game. As Repton increased their lead in the game further some great fieldling from Henry Westley (4D) and an exceptional catch from man of the match Daniel Williams (3A) gave NAS some hope but it wasn’t to be and Repton ran away comfortable winners in the end.

Danny Thomas (NAS U9 Cricket Coach)
After a great start from the boys we seemed to just lose our focus and make a few costly mistakes. We need to concentrate more and take our chances when the opportunities arise.  Credit to Repton though who are a great team and deserved the win, we will look forward to the NAS big bash fixture next week.

NAS U11 Boys Cricket vs Repton School
NAS 207-7 : 260-3 Repton

Monday 9th May 2016

On Monday afternoon the NAS U11 cricket team travelled to Repton School in their penultimate DASSA cricket fixture of the season.  After last week’s much improved performance away to WEK, the boys were in high spirits and knew it would be a tough afternoon against Repton.

With NAS losing the toss and being forced to bat, they started well with Kai Smith (6E) and Shane Thomas (5B) scoring some early singles to get NAS some runs on the scoresheet. As the pair continued to develop a steady partnership, a mix up between the wickets brought NAS back down to earth with a bump. In came Josh Harbour (6E) and Theo Armes (6F) who worked incredibly hard to get NAS back into the game and a great 4 from Nicholas Rutherford (6B) and William Hallet (6D), followed by some costly wickets gave NAS an uphill task but an achievable one if they bowled and fielded well.

In the field, NAS worked well to restrict Repton to 8 off the first pair with Shane Thomas (5B) bowling impressively. This continued with the team bowling really well throughout their innings. However, as we went for broke we made a few mistakes which cost us runs and ensured a comfortable win for Repton.

Danny Thomas/Chris Hand (NAS U11 Cricket Coaches)
A good effort from the boys, after making things difficult for ourselves with the bat, we bowled well and gave it a real go. We learn from the mistakes we made and take the positives out of a much improved performance and get ourselves ready for our final game against Hartland at home next week.
Man of the match – Shane Thomas (5B)
NAS U12B Rounders vs SES
NAS 11 - 7 SES

Sunday 8th May 2016

The girls played SES at NAS on Sunday. After winning the toss and choosing to field the girls started off really well, working well as a team and covering one another.

Team SES scored 4 rounders in the first innings, only one being a full rounder. NAS came into bat and scored 7 rounders in the first innings scoring 6 full rounders. The girls had some amazing hits of the ball, placing it all over the field with SES not being able to field it back. Into the 2nd innings SES came back strong scoring 3 rounders, but NAS went onto score another 4 rounders with a final score of SES 7 and NAS 11.

Sophia Arrango played as a bowler for the first time and was nominated as Player of the Match.

NAS U14A Rounders vs Dubai College
NAS 10.5 - 9.5 DC

On Tuesday 10th May the U14A Rounders played their fourth and final DASSA league match away at Dubai College. The NAS team fielded first and through good teamwork and communication held DC to 6 rounders and 6 outs. NAS then scored 7 rounders of their own in innings 1. Some calculated risk taking and good judgement calls resulted in only 4 outs.

Going into Innings 2 NAS knew it was going to be a tough battle with little to divide the teams in terms of score-line. Both teams batted and fielded equally well to result in 3 and a half rounders each. The final score was a 10.5-9.5 win for NAS.

Congratulations to Lily Ashby who was voted player of the match. A special mention must also go to Charlie, whose batting confidence improved drastically throughout the four matches played. Tasmin’s all-out effort when fielding also earned her a mention in the team talk at the end as did Ellen’s continued catching skills. Well done also to Mia who stepped up to bowl, enabling Tatyana to throw in from deep-field.

Although the league has now finished the team will continue to train on Tuesdays after school 3-4pm until Ramadan (or until it becomes too hot to continue!).

Congratulations girls, I am so pleased you finally got the win you deserved!

NAS U11 Boys & Girls Basketball vs Kings Dubai
Wednesday 11th May 2016

NAS U11 Girls
NAS 8 - 14 Kings

NAS U11 Boys
NAS 2 – 8 Kings

The NAS U11 boys and girls teams welcomed Kings Dubai for our first home games of the season. The girls played first, putting in a good defensive effort and creating many chances on the breakaway. However, unfortunately the shots weren’t sinking on this occasion and the final score was 14- 8.

It was then the boys turn, again it was a closely fought contest with many scoring opportunities created by both teams. However, unfortunately for NAS it was Kings who once again were more accurate, taking most of their scoring opportunities. The final score was 8-2.

Both teams have made fantastic progress over the course of the season and their attitude and effort has been exemplary every time they take the court. The girls finished third in their league and the boys sixth in theirs.

Thank you to all the parents for their support and well done to all the players!

Swimming News for the week of 8th-12th May 2016
NAS Competitive Squad was up against the Goliath's of the Dubai schools this week and boy did they get a mean punch from David.

Friendly Year 3 & 4 Gala against Jess Jumeirah
This was a great opportunity to pit our younger squad members against some of the best up and coming swimmers in Dubai. We won 65% of all the races, giving them and their coach a nasty shock. I'd like to single out Laila Wild for a great first performance for the competitive squad where she won two out of her three races.

Friendly Year 5 & 6 Gala against Jess Jumeirah
Jess Jumeirah's Year 5 & Year 6 swimmers are the best performing in Dubai and despite having a reduced squad due to conflicting sporting demands, NAS did really well against such tough competition. Special congratulations should go to Yuchen Zhou for winning 2 of her races and Callum Hamilton for a fantastic breaststroke where he narrowly came second against the best Year 6 swimmer in Dubai.

Competitive "Through Gala" as DESC Years 5-8
1st -  DESS and DESC
2nd - JESS Ranches
3rd -  NAS
4th -  Repton
5th -  Kings
As a Swimming coach there are a few memorable gala's I've presided over and Thursday's was definitely one of them. There is no doubt we were viewed by our DASSA League A competitors as the underdogs, an opinion that was, in no uncertain terms, reversed by the end of the afternoon. Ms Duffy, Alex and I took great pleasure in graciously accepting the slightly surprised congratulations from the other coaches!
The squad's performance was truly spectacular and their determination was evident in some fantastic individual performances. Special congratulations should go to the Year 8 members for coming second in their year group as well as the Year 6 boys relay team for winning their 4 x 50m freestyle race by a cool 25 metres. Individual mention should go to Theo Armes for a fantastic 50m Butterfly performance where he unfortunately lost by a fingernail and Nicholas Rutherford for amazing wins in his 50m Free and 100 Individual Medley.
As ever I'd like to thank my Coaching Team, Alex and Jo, Miss Duffy and the NAS PE department and finally the parents of all our swimmers for everything they do to support swimming at NAS.
"I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew I was. Don’t tell me I can’t do something. Don’t tell me it’s impossible. Don’t tell me I’m not the greatest. I’m the double greatest."

Secondary Gymnastics Competition @ WSO

On Sunday 8th May NAS competed in their first gymnastics competition. The event was held at GEMS Silicon Oasis and was attended by many schools in Dubai. The competition had 3 different levels that students could compete at. Level 1 beginner, level 2 intermediate and level 3 advanced. We entered some students in Year 7 and Year 8 at level 1; however, predominantly with level 2. For this level  students have to perform a floor sequence and 2 vaults.

For the first time ever competing in a gymnastics competition the students performed very well, despite being nervous about performing in front of a big crowd. Students performed on the floor first and then moved to vault.

All participants received medals for taking part in the competition. Individual medals were given out 1st, 2nd and 3rd for floor, vault and overall. The following students won medals for NAS Dubai.

Year 7
2nd place on vault- Caitlin Edmonstone and Safia Wright
3rd place overall- Caitlin Edmonstone
Year 8
1st place on floor- Teodora Cotirlan
2nd place on floor- Shadan Kazemi

1st place on vault- Te’ata Robinson
2nd place on vault- Zoe Barrett
All students performed well and were a credit to team NAS Dubai.
