Parent Surveys
Living in the information age we are familiar with the culture of the survey and at this time I must appeal to all parents to work through the surveys that have been compiled, the first by KHDA as part of the inspection process that we embrace next week:

https://khda.gov.ae/Parents

and then the second which is issued to all parents in Nord Anglia Education Schools around the world:

http://parentsurvey.nordanglia.com/survey/selfserve/5a0/160104?wave=y2017&mc_cid=786a02653c&mc_eid=df007dbfda

Thank you very much for the time you give to this.  It is important and most appreciated. The understanding derived from the Nord Anglia Survey in particular helps us understand the perceptions of what we do and how we can manage continuing improvement.

Throughout my own career in education I have always believed in the importance of parent, staff and student voice and today competence working through the complexities that ‘big data’ is an educational imperative to bring our students to understand.

I urge all parents to complete the surveys in the spirit that they are issued and in so doing know that your submission is an important expression of your client rights. As soon as the results have been gathered they will be processed and fed-back to you accordingly. The surveys are anonymous and your individual contribution counts.

Chinese New Year Celebrations
What an absolutely wonderful day it has been today celebrating The Year of the Rooster. It is tempting to put down the characteristics of the Rooster and link them to NAS Dubai but better perhaps to use the occasion simply to thank the whole team and above all, our students for making it such a bright and enthusiastic ‘roostering’ day. Our guest of honour, the Consul General from the People’s Republic of China , Madam Li Lingbing was most impressed.

Preparations for inspection
Finally, I would like to take this occasion to express due praise and thanks to our academic staff who have worked relentlessly preparing the school for the inspection next week and the IB accreditation that took place last week. While continuing to maintain the everyday high standards of learning that is expected at NAS Dubai everyone has given so much more over the last few weeks.  Staying on to prepare for the inspection our staff car park remains full until the early evening and refills again  throughout the weekend!  We could not have done more. We know ourselves better for the process. We shall enjoy hearing the judgments when they come, confident in the understanding of all that we have done.

Message from the Head of Primary

Dear Parents,

The Primary children have had a wonderful time today enjoying the Chinese New Year celebrations!

It was lovely to hear the Chinese music all the way from the car park this morning and walk in under the special arch. I had fun watching all the children arriving in their Chinese outfits or red clothes - many of them were super-excited, especially the ones wearing outfits identical to mine! It's not every day I match my clothes to a four year olds, but we were definitely all shopping at Dragonmart last weekend...

We always celebrate Chinese New Year in style at NAS Dubai (I can say always now we've got a three year old tradition in place) but I did feel this year our children performed especially well. The secondary students skit was excellent, delivered in very clear Chinese with excellent subtitles for those of us struggling to follow every word...I also loved the bamboo dance but have to admit to a personal bias since my Year 7 son was in it. The Primary children were so confident in their fan dance and horoscope song, it was a true pleasure to watch.

As always, the lions were extremely popular, especially with our youngest children, who had a surprise visit from the lions in their classroom.

If you were in school today I am sure you enjoyed the festive atmosphere and maybe were lucky enough to sample the fantastic food some of the parents had prepared. Thanks to all those parents who contributed to food and decor before, during and after the event and also to our wonderful Mandarin department who worked tirelessly to produce such an enjoyable day for all of us.

Happy New Year of the Rooster!

Message from the Head of Secondary

This week we had the IB team in for their final verification visit.  Although we will not know the outcome I can inform you the whole experience was very positive.

The team commented on the warm and welcoming nature of the school and they highlighted the enjoyable experiences they had in classes.  In the lessons the inspectors joined, they observed excellent engagement, outstanding questioning as well as a wide range of learning activities.

I am very excited about us becoming a World IB school, having come from an A Level system I recognise the limited choice of subjects I had.  I also had a very narrow perspective of the world around me (probably not helped by living on an Island only 9x5 miles).  The global curriculum, the range of subject choices as well as the rigour of the IB convince me that the IB is the best curriculum for an ever changing world.

The school is also ever changing - the recent recruitment in the UK has allowed us to continue to grow the secondary with new staff joining us next year in maths, English, science, PE, humanities and languages. We will also look at growing further leadership roles with the Head of PE role being advertised in coming weeks.

We welcome the KHDA in next week, thank you to those parents who have taken the time to reply to the survey.  I am looking forward to their visit and their feedback on the effectiveness of the education we offer here at NAS Dubai.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Year of the Rooster

Xin Nian Kuai Le! Happy New Year of the Rooster!

Some quotes from our highly anticipated annual traditional Lunar New Year celebration, collected by our reporter for the day Jihane Nohra (Y6E).

“It's so much fun and the food is delicious! The dumpling making station was great!”

“I loved the corners where you could get involved in playing the bamboo dance and the shuttlecock game.”

“I have learned you could make art by blowing ink from a tube and how to hold a brush when you do calligraphy!”

“I had a blast when the lions got off stage to come close to me!”

“I had my name written in Chinese, it was amazing!”

“I was so proud to be on stage!”

“I thought the riddle corner was the best: it was fun and I won a fortune cookie!”

Parents' quotes included:

“I was amazed by the number of students involved in the event.”

“My child was thrilled to be part of the show! What a great performance!”

“The level of mandarin of the students doing the sketch was impressive and it was fun!” (Native Mandarin parents)

The success of today’s event would have not been possible without the support of all the people involved. A sincere thank you goes to the commitment of our Mandarin students, the enthusiasm of the Mandarin parents community, the PA and the Chatter Box parents, the dedication of the group of artists of the temple door and the efficiency of the IT and Maintenance team.
