Introducing Starkbierfest!

We don't know about you, but after that winter we're ready to ring in Spring whether or not Spring is ready for us! Starkbierfest is an annual Munich tradition centered around the doppelbock--a traditional style of beer associated with the Lenten season. Read on to learn more!

Starkbier is another name for the doppelbock style of beer. Brewed to be consumed by monks in Munich during the Lenten season, this is the specific kind of beer the term "liquid bread" was first attributed to. German Starkbiers can all be indentified by the -tor suffix on the end of the brand, as in Paulaner Salvator.

Beer Poking

No, this isn't what it sounds like. In this carnival-style treat, a metal poker is heated in a fire and submerged in your beer! The resulting foamy beverage is smooth, rich, and tastes--dare we say--like a s'more!

The Paulaner Brewery

The story of the Paulaner Brewery goes all the way back to 1634. It was established by mendicant monks of the Minim Order. Paulaner takes its name from St. Francis of Paola, their founder.

Those who know, know that Starkbierfest is impossible to celebrate without liter-sized ceramic mugs. If you don’t already have one, when you buy a liter of Salvator on Friday night, you can get a ceramic liter stein for $1. Ein mass, bitte!
