It's Our Birthday!

Established May 15, 1965

Fifty-four years ago today, we first opened our doors for business. We want to share some pictures and stories from our past with you. Did we mention that it's free strudel day?

In the Beginning

Erich Christ and his brother Gerhard opened the business together. Erich had just gotten out of the Army and Gerhard was working as a traveling salesman out of Milwaukee. Looking for a place to start a restaurant, Gerhard found this place in Minneapolis that seemed promising...

Artists' Hangout

Among the first people to recognize what a special place this was, were the artists who lived and worked in the neighborhood - or visiting artists like photographer Richard Avedon. He left this photo from his 1970 exhibit at Mia, as a gift to the restaurant and neighborhood.

Moving and Shaking

By 1975 Erich and his wife Joanne had bought out Gerhard and purchased the lot next door. They had worked with the state legislature to make selling wine a part of their restaurant liquor license, and planned to expand the bar.

Time to Remodel

Charming as the old exterior seems now, in 1975 it seemed, well, old. Plus, business was booming and they had the lot next door to deal with. The idea of a genuine beer garden had been floated a few times, but would it work?

With the remodel, the beer garden and the new mural, came the decision to take down the billboards. For that, we were given an urban improvement award! There was a short-lived solar panel experiment, also. It was the 70s after all!

How Things Have Changed

Joanne took on the challenge of advocating for the businesses in the neighborhood, and, with a small group of like-minded peers, they hatched Eat Street as a way to identify and promote Nicollet Avenue south of downtown. We went from being one of the only places to eat for a mile around, to being one of over 50 places for a mile around!

Upcoming Events

In the last fifteen years, we've hosted a number of German-themed events. Coming up next week is the 12th Annual Spargelfest, a celebration of all things asparagus. And we do mean all things - we have asparagus appetizers, salads, dinners, desserts and drinks! Starts May 24. See you there!
