Keys to Mental and Emotional Wellness Solutions!

July 2014 marks the 6th observance of Bebe Moore Campbell Minority Health Awareness Month. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Campbell, hearing her speak and reading autographed copies of her books, 72 Hour Hold and Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry. An accomplished author, advocate and co-founder of the NAMI Urban Los Angeles affiliate, she recognized that:

  • Awareness is the first step to healing.
  • How you do what you do matters.
  • In the African American tradition, storytelling is a compelling call for education, understanding, and action.

"Once my loved one accepted the diagnosis, healing began for the entire family, but it took too long. It took years. Can't we, as a nation, begin to speed up that process? We need a national campaign to destigmatize mental illness, especially one targeted toward African Americans. The message must go on billboards and in radio and TV public service announcements. It must be preached from pulpits and discussed in community forums. It's not shameful to have a mental illness. Get treatment. Recovery is possible."

~ Bebe Moore Campbell, 2005

WELLNESS EDUCATION

Barriers to Mental and Emotional Wellness
  • Shame. Blame. Secrecy.
  • Stigmatization. Discrimination. Demonization
  • Hiding. Denying. Lying.
  • Confusion. Misunderstanding. Ignorance.
  • Discomfort. Apprehension. Fearfulness.

Solutions (some, not all) for Mental and Emotional Wellness
  • Awareness.
  • Acknowledgement
  • Acceptance.
  • Support.
  • Perseverance.

Lessons from my Personal Journey
In addition to individuals, mental illnesses directly impact families, communities, institutions, cultures, society and humanity,
  • Sometimes we refuse to acknowledge in our head or accept in our hearts what we already know in our gut.
  • We hear it in our music. We see it in our demeanor/appearance/ behavior. We taste it in the drinks and substances we ingest. We smell it in our stench. We feel it in our silence.
  • Denial is not a healing strategy. Seeking support is an act of courage.
  • Recovery is possible. Healing is a process.

Healing Quotes

Quotes have become part of my recovery process. Quotes inform, instruct and inspire. I share five of my favorite quotes on “Healing”:
  • The secret of health for both the mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future ... but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.        ~ Siddhartha Guatma Bhudda
  • Healing begins where the wound was made. ~ Alice Walker
  • I have come to believe that caring for myself is not self-indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival. ~ Audre Lorde
  • When you stand and share your story in an empowering way, your story will heal you and your story will heal somebody else. ~ Iyanla Vanzant
