Keys to Mental and Emotional Wellness Solutions!

The last newsletter included a list of observances held in September which relate to mental and emotional wellness.

Omitted was an event established by Presidential proclamation in 1978 - National Grandparents Day! Grandparent’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of September.

On this special day, we are reminded to tap into the wisdom and heritage of our parents’ parents. Plus, grandparents reflect upon what our grandchildren teach us and the extent to which our own mental and emotional wellness is linked to the wellbeing of our children’s children. Generational health and wellbeing in all dimensions of wellness passes forward.

WELLNESS EDUCATION
Wellness Facts:
The seasons have changed, it is officially Autumn!  For some, the change triggers an emotional or mental imbalance - SAD.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of mood disorder that is seemingly set off by seasonal variations, especially summer to autumn.  Reduction in sunlight and shorter hours of daylight are contributing factors to this shift to deep depression and/or high anxiety.

Classic symptoms are oversleeping, daytime fatigue, carbohydrate craving, weight gain, decreased sexual interest, lethargy, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, lack of interest in normal activities, and decreased socialization.

Persons who have “normal” mental health for most of the year also may experience SAD when the seasons change.

These researched-based practices address more than symptoms, click here for self-management tips. These are interventions that help manage SAD and other mental and emotional challenges.
