Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Scripture:
Ephesians 3:14-21

We begin a new sermon series this Sunday, September 4, called #WeAreBlakemore. We'll take six weeks to look at the core values to which we believe God calls us to aspire and live. This first Sunday will be an introduction based on Ephesians 3:14-21. Each week we will also receive Holy Communion in a different way. We hope you'll make plans to join us this Sunday at 10:30 am.

As Pastor John begins his "#WeAreBlakemore" series, Kevin Walker is developing a companion handout for each week of the series containing thoughts/opinions of Blakemore members about the values we have identified as integral to us. Please click on the link below to add your thoughts on any or all of the values.
Our annual charge conference is Monday, September 12, at 6:30 pm. The charge conference is the official yearly meeting for our local church, presided over by our District Superintendent. All are welcome and invited to attend. We will do some official business - such as electing leadership positions for 2017, re-certifying Yiwen Bi as a candidate for ordained ministry, and setting the pastor's salary - as well as celebrating all we have done this past year and looking at the big picture of our common mission and ministry.

Friends,
I want to remind you that we have a lock-in scheduled for all 3rd-6th graders on Friday night, September 9--Saturday morning, September 10.  Details about cost, arrival time, and pick up time will come soon, but make sure you plan to attend. This will be a fun event to which your child can invite friends!

On Sunday, September 18 as part of Pastor John's sermon series "#WeAreBlakemore" the children will be leading worship! We will focus on the value that we have as a church on children...even when they are busy and fidgety. It should be a great Sunday! Please put that Sunday on your calendar and make plans to attend!
 Beginning Sept. 7th
Anyone interested in learning more about the prayer shawl ministry at BUMC is invited to gather in Fellowship Hall before Wednesday night supper to share patterns, yarn, and join in the fun.
Two new adult Sunday School classes!
Patty Tippens leads a Bible Study in the Library (Room 203), and Rev. John Hill leads a class in Room 204. Both classes are open to anyone, but John's class will be geared toward parents whose children and youth are in Sunday School. Pathfinders will continue to meet in room 207. We hope you'll join us for Sunday School each week at 9:30 am!
Blakemore UMC Young Adults
Blakemore UMC recently started a new fellowship for young adults (from college students to young parents). Every week 7-8 young adults gather to build a community that values both spiritual/theological formation and sharing Christ's love. Various events include Bible study, discipleship conversation, fun activities, and ministry projects.

Next Monday, September 5, we'll eat at Fido (1812 21st Ave. S) at 6:30 pm to talk about how we want to organize the Wedesday night program for the church in November.

Contact Yiwen Bi (979-422-0108 or yiwen.bi@vanderbilt.edu) for more information or to share your ideas about discussion topics.
CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RACE

Blakemore UMC and Clark Memorial UMC are seeking to partner together to have conversation about race and faith in our society. With the backdrop of many tragic shootings in the news recently and the controversy surrounding Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter movements, we want to create a space for dialogue between different races and explore how our faith in Christ informs the ways we view and respond to a variety of situations and systemic issues. We still have details to work out, but our first of what will hopefully be a series of weekly conversations will be on Sunday, September 11. We will join our friends at Clark Memorial UMC for lunch following worship and then for a conversation. We have tentatively chosen the new book
The End of White Christian America as a jumping off point for the conversation. We are hoping to have about 8 people from each congregation participate each week. If you are interested, please contact Rev. John Hill.

Boomerstock is the first comprehensive study of how the church can engage Baby Boomers, whose numbers will double the number of people over 60 years of age in the next 20 years. This generation will change aging as we know it. The event will gather wide sources of information about who Baby Boomers are and what they are like from the vantage point of the fields of sociology, psychology, spirituality, marketing, retirement services, and activism. Boomerstock will give you the tools and insight to understand the dynamic change that Boomers will make as they age, a change that will affect us all.

Blakemore's existence depends upon many volunteers.  We are compiling an up-to-date list of those volunteers. Review the list below and submit any corrections, additions or deletions to the church office. You may also volunteer for any of these areas in the same way. We will publish an accurate and current list as soon as possible.  Thanks to every one who has or will volunteer to help in these important responsibilities.     Cavit Cheshier
