St James Street Big Local

January 2015

Our new survey is now online!
You gave us your ideas - now help us to prioritise them.......

Big Local volunteers have been gathering wishes from local people over the last 18 months and in December 2014 we asked a professional researcher to analyse our 488 survey responses. A task group then whittled the vast amount of information to 29 key ideas for further voting. The full report on how this was done (dated 8th December 2014) can be found on our website here.

Our 29 ideas have been loaded into a new online wikisurvey tool and we need your help to prioritise them by comparing ideas two at a time. You can compare as many, or as few, ideas as you like and upload new ideas for people to vote on. This will give us a good idea of how local people would like to prioritise the spending of the Big Local £1m over the next 10 years. Please click here or on the image below to visit our website and start voting now. Please take time to vote at least once or twice - without your votes our area will not be able to draw down the £1m to make our area an even better place to live!

Get Mapping with Big Local at The Mill 11th-21st February 2015

Local children have been collecting and recording their thoughts and feelings about the area. They have explored every corner of St James; unearthing many hidden treasures. They have now returned, laden with booty. Given some help from local architects and designers, these young adventurers have constructed an amazing treasure map to share with their neighbours. They have also made drawings and written their thoughts about St James, which have been deposited in an archive for posterity. Come to the Mill to see their treasures and join our treasure hunt! Participate in a mapping workshop and contribute to a map of community assets during our exhibition at The Mill, Coppermill Lane 11th-21st January 2015.

During our treasure hunting workshops, you will be guided by our special treasure map to take a stroll around the St James area. On your return, we will ask you to record your thoughts on our special St James Treasure Certificates and mark the locations of your finds on the big treasure map. All of the maps and materials from the exhibition will be submitted to Local Trust as our "Area Profile" which is a key document required to release our £1m funding.

Please contact our community worker Neesha Badhan if you want to participate in one of the workshops (free and suitable for all ages):
Saturday 14th February 10-12pm or Thursday 19th February 10-12pm. Alternatively come to meet Neesha and discuss Big Local/volunteering opportunities/improving the local area at drop-in sessions: Tuesday 10th February  2-5pm

Big Local needs you!

All of the Steering Group members are volunteers who have been working away for 18 months to help release the £1m pledged by the National Lottery for community projects. Without help from local people we cannot draw down the money so Big Local needs you!

The group are particularly looking for help, preferably but not exclusively, from residents within the mapped St James Street area.
We need help from volunteers to form a new working party to establish the structure and governance of Big Local over the next decade.

If you would like to get involved or know more, please get in touch with our worker Neesha Badhan at or tel: 07881 015 873
