Meet the Minister

ACT Education Minister, Yvette Berry, will be joining us for our next General Meeting, in Public Education Week. Join us as we discuss public education in Canberra - the issues and solutions. It is on Tuesday May 23, at 6:45 for a 7pm start, 51 Fremantle Drive, Stirling. And all are welcome.

Making your P&C more effective

If you couldn't make it to our Effective P&C Workshop last term, don't worry! We will be repeating this popular and informative workshop on Thursday June 8. The Workshop covers ways to improve how your association works, recruiting volunteers, fundraising, improving meetings, and the P&C as an employer. Plenty of time is allowed for your questions. Contact us to register your attendance.

If you still can't come, then you can check out the presentation from the workshop and all the resources on our website.

Your Council membership

Invoices have been posted and emailed to treasurers this week for your P&C's membership (affiliation) fees for Council. We’re here to help and to represent our members (that's you!), and we do that using the membership fees we collect each year. If you need convincing that you get value for your money, have a look here.

For the first time in eight years, there has been a slight increase in fees for P&Cs in primary and high schools. This will allow us to provide some relief to college P&Cs who are struggling to survive – three have folded in the last four years. If you have questions, please contact us.

What is great about your school?

During Public Education Week this year - May 22-26 - we'd like to encourage all parents to share the great things about their school on social media, using the hashtag #PublicEdWeek, because we know great things happen at our schools every week. We've teamed up with the Education Directorate to create posters to help you spread the word, and keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook feeds for posts you can share with your networks.

Healthy, active fundraising

The Physical Activity Foundation is about to launch a new healthy fundraising option for primary schools. The Active Schools Challenge encourages friends and family to sponsor kids to get moving every day during Active August, with a majority of the proceeds going back to the school. To pre-register your school email the Foundation and they will send you all the relevant information when registrations open on May 23.

Canteen training

The ACT Nutrition Support Service, is holding a free traffic light system and menu planning workshop for school canteen managers and volunteers to help you meet the requirements of the ACT Public School Food and Drink Policy. It is on Tuesday May 30, from 3.30 to 5.30pm in Chifley. RSVP by May 26.

Nutrition Australia is also running their Food Safety Supervisor Course for Term 2 on Tuesday May 23 in Chifley. All canteens need a qualified food safety supervisor and the training is nationally recognised. Registrations close May 16.

School traffic subcommittee

Council is forming a School Traffic Subcommittee to help progress our efforts on supervised school crossings and to share information and experiences in making submissions to Transport Canberra. P&Cs are now invited to nominate a member to this subcommittee. It is envisaged that the subcommittee will operate by email and only meet face to face should the need arise. Simply email us with the name of your P&C and nominee and their email address if you'd like to take part.

Google account warning

Many P&Cs have google accounts and we have been alerted to an international hacking event focusing on Google accounts. At least one P&C has been affected. It was a very subtle and sophisticated attack, which used information contained in the stored emails to pose as committee members while asking the treasurer to transfer money. Be extra suspicious at the moment and change your passwords.

Screenagers

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Teachers at UC High School Kaleen have organised a special screening of the movie 'Screenagers' at Dendy for May 23. It is open to everyone. Through poignant and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to navigate the digital world and find balance.

Walk to school day

Friday May 19 is Walk Safely to School Day, a national event which encourages primary school children to walk and commute safely to school. It is not too late for your school to be involved.

Kids love colouring?

The Botanic Gardens is holding a colouring competition ahead of their open day on May 28.
