Promoting your P&C

Need help encouraging parents to get involved in your school's P&C?  Check out our brochure and letter templates listed under 'Promoting your P&C' on our website, as well as our Information Sheets on growing your P&C, communicating with parents and using social media.

For P&Cs using social media - do you need help? We will be discussing whether there is the need for a group to share expertise and support each other with using Facebook pages at our upcoming General Meeting on Tuesday September 22 (see below).  If you can't make the meeting but would like support with social media, please let us know.

Inquiry into school's 'inappropriate structure'

Parents may have seen reports in the media about the findings of the Education Directorate's inquiry into an 'inappropriate structure' built in a Canberra school. The full findings are available online.

Term 4 bus changes

Starting Monday October 12, there will again be changes to ACTION's dedicated school bus services. These include minor directional changes to two school services, and changed start times for 56 school bus routes. The ACTION website has all the details:

Health promotion grants

The ACT Health Promotion Innovation Fund is now offering grants of up to $15,000 for projects which address smoking prevention or reduction, reduce the harmful consumption of alcohol, or improve children's health and wellbeing outcomes in relation to weight, better eating habits and increased physical activity. Applications are due by October 19 and must follow the guidelines.

Nutritious tips and canteen help

The Healthy Kids Association (HKA) has great ideas, advice and services for school canteens. Council has now arranged for ACT school canteens to be HKA members for the next 3 years! Call them (02 9876 1300) or email to register your membership if you do not already receive their magazine. You can also sign up for a "Parents eNewsletter" for information on nutrition for kids including recipes, debunking myths and clarifying confusing topics in the mainstream media.

Outward bound: wilderness adventures for young people

Outward Bound Australia's 'Navigator' program uses the wilderness and adventure-based activities to build integrity, responsibility, resilience and compassion in 15-17 year-olds. The core outcome is Striving To Be The Best You Can Be. Outward Bound programs are highly regarded by employers.

You can find out more about Outward Bound from a guest speaker at Council's next General Meeting, Tuesday September 22 or online.

Storybook Garden competition

The ACT Storybook Garden Competition is about creating a miniature garden inspired by a storybook, using recycled and natural materials. Create your garden, snap a photo and enter. There are great prizes. The competition closes November 8 and the $10 entry fee will support the next stage of Boundless Canberra, the all-abilities playground.
