Canteen Working Group meeting

Council's Canteen Working Group will meet at 7pm on Wednesday June 17 at Maitland House, 100 Maitland St, Hackett. Anyone with an interest in running school canteens and sharing expertise across schools is welcome to come. Discussions will include a new User Guide to the National Healthy School Canteen Guidelines, a new Nutrition Advisory Service, a study looking for sustainable models for school canteens, and issues from school canteens. Please advise your attendance.

Understanding learning difficulties

The Education Directorate have developed some excellent parent guides to various learning difficulties, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.

Parents are also invited to a free workshop on how to better support children with learning difficulties both at home and at school. It will be presented by educational psychologist Mandy Nayton on Thursday June 25 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Centre for Teaching and Learning, 51 Fremantle Drive, Stirling. Register by June 19.

Free legal advice for P&Cs

P&C associations are able to use a free, legal advice clinic. The clinic is designed for small business operators, providing 30 minute consultations to help with a legal problem or query. Council has confirmed that P&Cs are eligible for this assistance. There is more information on the clinic and contact details.

Our Council office is still happy to help P&Cs with contracts and other compliance questions (but cannot provide legal advice). We are also happy to discuss your issue with you prior to you attending a legal advice session so that you can make best use of the short free session.

NSWBuy - are you saving yet?

P&Cs can now register with NSWBuy - a government procurement agent - to get low prices on a huge range of purchases from office supplies to canteen produce. Many P&Cs have already started saving. To get on board, read the details of how the scheme works, fill in the registration form and send it to us. You'll find everything here.

What do you do at school?

Council's national counterpart, ACSSO, is conducting research to identify how parents are involved in education, what time they spend and how much value they add to our schools. They'd love to know about your involvement via an online survey. It should take less than 10 minutes of your time.

We have recently updated the grants page on our website with opportunities available to P&Cs/schools. A number close in June or July, including:

Sporting schools

Primary schools are urged to register for the Federal Government’s new Sporting Schools program which helps schools set up before-, during- and after-school sports activities, link with sporting bodies and find approved coaches. There is $100 million in funding available from July 1 which registered schools can apply for.

Daniel Morcombe Foundation

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation invites all schools to hold an activity to mark 'Day for Daniel' (October 30) which raises awareness about child safety and protection. The Foundation is helping empower children to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something is not right. Start by finding out more and registering your event. Once registered you will receive a free pack with posters, balloons, stickers, informative DVD and activity sheets.
