P&Cs need to know...

Pass on your P&C wisdom!

The end of the year isn't far away and if you are not intending on continuing on the P&C, make sure your efforts and knowledge don't go to waste - pass it on! The new 'you' on the committee will Love it when you hand over the job next year, complete with a set of succinct handover notes. If you don't already have notes on how to do your role, you can use our sample handover notes as a guide, adding the relevant information for your P&C.

Open Q&A with Education Directorate Executives

Our general meeting next week (also our AGM) will begin with a panel discussion involving three of the Education Directorate’s Senior Executives. Director General, Natalie Howson will provide a short presentation on their new Strategic Plan, the Future of Education Strategy and school improvement agenda. Natalie, along with Deputy Director General Meg Brighton and Mark Huxley, Executive Director of School Improvement, will then take part in a panel-style Q&A session, taking questions and comments from the floor.

Do come along with your questions!
It's on Tuesday 27 November from 7pm at 51 Fremantle Drive, Stirling.
You might like to spread the word among your school community.

Since it is the AGM, nominations are invited for positions on the Council Executive Committee, and a range of other representative roles. The composition of Council working groups will also be finalised. See the Agenda and Nomination Forms for more information.

Treasurers! It's audit time

As your P&C’s financial year draws to a close (for almost all P&Cs this is Dec 31), it's time to prepare your accounts to be looked over by an external auditor. Our Treasurer Handbook includes an extensive section on how to do this, including a checklist of what you should provide (see Section 11). Remember that your P&C may not have to pay for an expensive qualified accountant - see more about our Book Swap and upcoming audit workshop.

School reports - seeking your input

As mentioned in our recent article, the Education Directorate is developing a template for all schools in the ACT for their semester reports to parents. Since the template is being reviewed, now is a great time to raise any difficulties you may have with reports, the layout and language used, with your school. You could even make it an item for your P&C meeting and have a broad-ranging discussion.

We have the opportunity to provide feedback to the Education Directorate, so drop us a line if you have something to say about reports.

A starting question: The A-E comparative data that is usually delivered on a separate page to your school report - should it be included with the report in this way? Or available on request from the school? Do you value this information?  We'd love to hear you views. Please drop us a quick email

Read all about it!

Our Term 4 issue of ParentACTion magazine is now available online for your reading pleasure. Click through to see the results of our Photo Competition, plus there is information on student reports, and how to get grandparents involved in your P&C. This term our ‘At Our P&C’ section looks at a couple of P&Cs who have made the transition to employing a P&C Executive Officer/Business Manager to take care of their canteen and other business activities.
Council happenings...

Representing your views to government

Each year Council writes a submission to the ACT Government ahead of their budgeting process with suggestions and recommendations on budget measures which could be taken to improve our public schools. This year our budget submission has got some attention from the media (most focusing on a very small part of what we have asked the government to consider!). You can read this year's submission and see how we have coalesced and combined a great deal of parent feedback from our meetings and other activities into a comprehensive wish-list for our schools.

Preschool for 3 year olds?

A key part of the ACT Government's Early Learning Strategy is the provision of 15 hours per week, free universal quality early childhood education for three-year-old children in the ACT. What do you think? What is important in implementing this? Come along to our Early Learning committee meeting TONIGHT to have your say - we'd love to hear your ideas. All are welcome, 100 Maitland Street Hackett from 7pm.
