P&Cs need to know...

Is your constitution out of date?

Many P&Cs find their constitution no longer reflects the way their association operates. So we have created a hands-on workshop to step you through the process of reviewing, updating and amending your constitution. We will look at the Model Rules for ACT association constitutions, the ACT Associations Incorporations Act, Council’s sample constitution for P&Cs, and the process of passing an amended constitution through your P&C.

Its on Tuesday 30 July from 7 to 9:30pm at the Centre for Teaching and Learning, 51 Fremantle St, Stirling. Click here to register.

Resources to grow your P&C

Attracting new people to engage with your P&C and volunteer for small and large roles is something that needs constant work, and good communication. We have resources on our website to help and this recent article to read. The 'Fundraising Whisperer' also has help to offer online (choose the Volunteers category under Resources) and on Facebook.

Growing your P&C also means making your committee a positive and welcoming place where newcomers feel safe to contribute and throw ideas around. Here is an excellent article to get you thinking. If things are not going well for your P&C, Council can offer a staff member to attend your next meeting to help find a positive way forward.

Canteen connect

ACT Health and Nutrition Australia will once again be running this popular event for managers and coordinators of school canteens. It is a great way to connect with canteens at other schools, and stay informed about new developments. The event isn't until Tuesday 17 September, but keep an eye out for a flyer being sent to all schools soon for your chance to say what you would like included in this year's event.

While we are talking canteens, a quick reminder that Nutrition Australia's Betterbites food products are available for canteens to purchase - healthier items for your menu including the very popular spinach and ricotta rolls (a great way to add a vegetarian option) and sausage rolls. They are now offering a reduced packaging option in response to canteen requests to minimise litter and waste.

June General Meeting

Our upcoming Hot Topics Meeting will include information on ACT's Directors of School Improvement. There are five staff in these roles across Canberra, who have management responsibly for school principals and oversee school improvement in their region. Mark Huxley, Executive Director of School Improvement, will tell us more about these roles, their responsibilities and how they may assist schools, parents and P&Cs.

Other topics on the agenda include:
  • risk management plans for P&C events and the ratio of parents to students (eg at discos)
  • the first increase in Council affiliation fees in 10 years
  • our Reconciliation Action Plan and how P&Cs can adopt it
  • school-supplied Chromebooks - concerns that students bypass security, your views on the program and impact/use at home
  • update on Council projects: Recruiting Volunteers and P&C Business Model.
Please join us Tuesday 25 June, from 7-9:30pm at the Centre for Teaching and Learning, 51 Fremantle St, Stirling.

School reports

The Education Directorate is currently rolling out a new template for school reports so now is a great time for a discussion about how to make them more useful and meaningful for parents. What better place for that discussion than your P&C meeting! But first check out this article explaining about the new template and what sections of the report can be tailored by the school and what is set.
