P&Cs need to know...

Committee hand-overs

Welcome to new committee members for 2019 and welcome back continuing members. If you are finishing up on the P&C and no longer wish to receive this e-bulletin, there is an unsubscribe link at the end.

Council is here to help ACT parent associations. Our To Do list or post-AGM checklist are the perfect place to start, and our Information Sheets have a wealth of information, answers to your questions and point to our useful resources and templates. Help is also available in our free workshops - see below.

Sharing expertise from our P&Cs

At Council we are constantly impressed by the great ideas and enthusiasm of our members (that's you!). We are really keen for parent associations to learn from each other and not reinvent the wheel, so we help share your collective wisdom:
  • by connecting you via special-interest working groups which generally operate by email and are a great source of knowledge and answers to questions on topics such as uniform shops and canteens
  • through highlighting great P&C ideas and endeavours in our 'At Our P&C' series of article from our regular magazine
  • via social media - we share posts from other P&Cs and are happy to post your questions for our eager audience to chime in on (join us on Facebook or Twitter)
  • at our meetings - the perfect place to meet other people in a similar situation to yourself.

Free training for P&Cs

We've been in the P&C game for a while and have learnt a few tricks. Come along to our workshops to answer all your P&C-related questions... and some you've not yet asked!

Effective P&C Workshop: the perfect workshop for all office bearers - especially presidents - to find out more about running your parent association well. From 'what is our P&C all about' to employing staff; from promoting what you do to running meetings well; the session is a chance to hear from P&C veterans and meet others in the same position as yourself. Sign up here.
Thursday 2 May, 6:30-9:00pm, repeated Tuesday 21 May (6:30-9:00pm) in Stirling.

Treasurer and Insurance Workshop: all treasurers should attend to find out more about the insurance package Council coordinates for our members, as well as important considerations and details for performing the job of treasurer successfully and as easily as possible. Sign up here
Tuesday 7 May,  7-9:30pm in Stirling.

Constitution Workshop: if your constitution is out of date, this hands-on workshop is for you. Bring your own constitution and we'll go through the content and wording required, plus how to pass an amended document at your association.
Thursday 23 May,  7-9:30pm in Stirling. Sign up here

Attention canteens!

(Please pass this information on to your canteen team.)

HKA Memberships
Council has paid for all P&C-managed school canteens to be members of the Healthy Kids Association because of the advice and resources they have available to help canteens. These memberships do not expire until the end of 2019.
Many P&C canteens recently received an invoice for the renewal of their membership from HKA. These were sent in error. There is no need to pay. The invoice from HKA can be disregarded

And while you're here, we'd love to know - how useful is your HKA membership?
Really valuable
Pretty useful
Sometimes useful
Not very useful
Never heard of them!

Red alert
Nutrition Australia have advised that some prepacked foods, popular with canteens, have changed their recipes (without any indication on the packets) and that some products that were previously classified as Amber are now deemed Red (and cannot be sold on school canteens).  We would advise all canteen managers to re-check the ingredients lists of products they sell to ensure they still comply with the guidelines. The Go for Green guide will step you through this process.

Career planning

myfuture is Australia’s National Career Information Service. It assists career planning, career pathways and work transitions by providing information and support for career development for students, and additional resources for those who support or influence career choices. The earliest – and often most powerful – learning about careers is shaped by the adults in a child’s life. The Assist your child page contains articles that can assist parents and carers to begin the conversation with their child about the world of work.
