Commercial sponsorship of P&Cs

The issue of commercial sponsorship of P&C activities (events, uniform shops) was raised at last night's Council meeting. P&Cs should note that it is against ETD policy to enter into an exclusive arrangement with any company and this applies to P&Cs activities on school property. This does not prevent P&Cs (or schools) from accepting appropriate sponsorship for any activity or event, provided that there is no exclusivity in the arrangement, that is, the sponsor’s competitors are also free to sponsor such activity/events.

Our Council policy D8 ('Commercial Sponsorship') covers this issue further, noting that Council opposes any form of sponsorship that would undermine our schools, such as using the school or students to promote a particular product.

How do you help your high-schooler learn?

The Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY) is conducting research about partnerships between families and schools to improve student learning. They are holding discussion groups with parents of high-school students (Yr 7-10) and would love to know what you think makes for a good partnership and the things you do to support you child’s learning at high school. High school parents in the ACT can register to participate or contact Sara for more information. Participants will receive a small reimbursement as thanks for their time and input.

Starting Kindy?

If your child is stating Kindergarten next year, don't miss the 'Transition to Kindergarten' Seminar - an informative and free session for parents, with tips on helping your child prepare and making it a positive transition. It's on Thursday November 5 from 7-8:30pm in Stirling.

Running a P&C Facebook page? Need help?

Janet Dawson (from Kingsford-Smith School P&C) has set up a new Facebook Group for parents who look after their P&C Facebook presence and want support. It is an online community where you can get help, and discuss ideas and approaches to social media. Find the group here (or by searching in Facebook for ‘P&C FB Admin Network ACT’) and then click 'Join Group'.  Note that you will have to join from your personal profile, not your P&C's 'page'.

Canteen help and nutrition tips

The Healthy Kids Association has great ideas, advice and services for school canteens. Council has paid the fees so that all ACT school canteens are members of this organisation. They also have an email newsletter for parents with information on nutrition for kids including recipes, debunking myths and clarifying confusing topics in the mainstream media.

Healthy Schools Network

The Healthy Schools Network ACT is a collaboration of local government and Not-For-Profit organisations that promote health and wellbeing in schools. The Network maintains a website which provides a 'one stop shop' for the multitude of health and wellbeing programs and resources on offer in Canberra for teachers and parents. Council is a member of the Network with our interest in student wellbeing and focus on healthy canteens and fundraising.

'Invention Convention'

Questacon will host budding scientists and innovators (aged 14-18) for a three-day convention in January 2016 on innovation, idea development, prototyping and identifying markets. Be quick - applications close October 30.

Pass it on!

We strive to provide information of interest to all school parents in the Council Communicator. If you think any of the items above are of interest to parents at your school, please pass them on via your school newsletter or whatever other means you wish. The items for high school parents and new Kindy enrolments may be of particular interest.

We have a template page for school newsletters to make it easier for you to cut and paste items to submit to your school newsletter under the P&C Council banner if you wish.
