Free training for P&Cs
Come along to our workshops to answer all your P&C-related questions.

Effective P&C Workshop: the perfect workshop for all office bearers - especially presidents - to find out more about running your parent association well. From 'what is our P&C all about' to employing staff; from promoting what you do to running meetings well; the session is a chance to hear from P&C veterans and meet others in the same position as yourself.
Tuesday 21 May, 6:30-9:00pm, in Stirling. Sign up here.
Constitution Workshop: if your constitution is out of date, this hands-on workshop is for you. Bring your own constitution and we'll go through the content and wording required, plus how to pass an amended document at your association.

Insurance renewal
Treasurers should have received insurance renewal questionnaires from Civic Insurance, brokers of our group insurance scheme. If you haven't received yours, it could be because we do not have contact details for this year's committee (please submit these to us via our Office Bearers' Form).
Treasurers, in conjunction with the committee, should carefully review their insurance needs and fill out the questionnaire accurately and comprehensively to ensure your insurance covers your P&C properly. There is an additional form this year, asking for information about any events you intend to hold over the next 12 months. We know things can change over time, but do fill it in as accurately as possible now and advise the brokers of any changes, such as new events you decide to run, during the time.
Our Treasurer and Insurance Workshop is on tonight to answer all your questions, or contact our office or the broker.

Inquiry into bullying and violence in ACT schools
The ACT Government is calling for public submissions to the Inquiry into the management and minimisation of bullying and violence in ACT schools. Anyone can make a submission directly to the Inquiry and we would encourage parents to do so. Note that submissions are publicly available and will include your name, and you may be asked to appear before the Committee. As this will not suit all parents, Council will also be coordinating a submission to the Inquiry and would welcome input from any parent or carer outlining their experience of the management of violence in ACT public schools. This way, parents can remain anonymous. If you would like to provide information for Council's submission please email by 9am, 13 May.
We would appreciate your assistance in sharing this information with parents at your school.

After school care changes
The Directorate are embarking on a new tender process for After School Care providers. We are yet to hear details, but if you have feedback about your provider, or your P&C and parents would like to have input into the selection of the service provider, now would be be a good time to have a conversation at your P&C meeting about this, or to discuss with your principal. This applies to all schools with an Afters program, not just those run by P&Cs.
Do you think parents should be consulted about the selection of the Afters provider at their school?
Yes, they should be consulted about preference of provider
Yes, they should have final say via a vote
No, the school Principal/Directorate should choose the provider
For P&Cs who run their Afters programs, Council will be offering support with the tender process and we have emailed with an update today.

Bus network feedback
We are collating feedback on travelling to school using the new bus network. We would like to hear from any public school parents, carers or students about any specific difficulties you have with buses to and from school and will represent these to Transport Canberra. Simply email us, and please spread the word among your school community. A notice for placement in newsletters was provided to delegates this week.

Pass it on!
We strive to provide information of interest to all school parents in the Council Communicator. If you think any of the items above are of interest to parents at your school, please pass them on via your school newsletter or whatever other means you wish. We would be grateful if you would share our requests for feedback on the buses and violence in schools in particular.
We have a template page for school newsletters to make it easier for you to cut and paste items to submit to your school newsletter under the P&C Council banner if you wish.

Cycling program for schools
Cycling ACT is offering a cycling program in schools, called Let's Ride.
- Let's Ride is a 6-hour curriculum developed by Cycling Australia that teaches kids to ride safely by developing their knowledge, skills and confidence.
- The Let's Ride program has been linked to the national PDHPE curriculum
- Sporting Schools offers grants which would cover the course cost, making the program free to schools and participants.
- There is flexibility as to whether the course is delivered in class time or after school, whether a whole class participates or just students who nominate to do the course, whether the course is delivered over 6 sessions or 4, and so on. They'll work with schools to find the best solution.
