Contemplating P&Cs
The way in which parent associations formally operate has changed little in decades, despite changes in lifestyles over this time. This has led Council to review the structures surrounding how parents are involved in our schools. Do we need to change? We'd love your input via our Business Model Survey. Discussions about possible models will be a major component of our General Meeting on 25 September.

Schools for All focus group
Following the 2015 Schools for All report and subsequent implementation of recommendations, the Education Directorate (EDU) is evaluating the process and outcomes of the project. As part of this, focus groups are being run with parents to discuss perceptions of safety, learning and fun at schools, particularly for students with complex needs. Council has arranged for an EDU-run focus group to be held at 7pm on Wednesday 5 September at Maitland House, Hackett. Any parents wishing to take part can contact Terry (6241 5759).
We ask P&C members to pass on this invitation to other parents in your community. (We have a template for sharing Communicator items to your school newsletter, if that helps!)

Australia's biggest safety lesson
Given the recent approaches by strangers to school students in some regions of Canberra, P&Cs and schools may be interested in participating in the Daniel Morcombe Foundation's 'Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson 2018' on Friday 26 October 26. The fun and interactive lesson will teach personal safety strategies for children 3-8 years. Last year over 100 000 children watched the lesson at the same time. Find out more, access resources and register here.

Access days
Given the success of recent 'access days' for some Canberra attractions and business, several are now having regular sensory-friendly sessions. These sessions provide opportunities for guests on the Autism Spectrum, along with their families and friends, access outside of the regular opening hours. The aim is to develop resilience in the children and to promote integration for both the families and the businesses. Depending on the activity, some modifications will be made to accommodate people on the Autism spectrum. Regular sessions are now at Flip Out (1st Sunday of the month), Bloc Haus (2nd Sunday of the month) and Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing (4th Sunday of the month).
