Funds available to help your canteen

Council is now taking applications for funds ($500-2000) to improve the viability of your canteen. We can fund a limited number of projects which would help P&C-run canteens to increase their efficiency, improve business operations, enhance profits, train staff or upgrade facilities - anything which will enhance the canteen's viability. Read the details and examples. Applications must be made on this form by August 24. Call the office if you need an extension on this deadline.
Council is grateful to an ACT Government grant for these funds.

Policy conference

Each year Council holds a policy conference to discuss changes to Council policy. We need your input so that we can communicate as accurately as possible the collective views of public school parents in a range of different forums. Please come along - 6:45pm on Tuesday August 25 at the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Stirling.

P&C information sheets

We have recently finished updating our extensive collection of online information sheets designed to help P&Cs with all aspects of running their organisation and activities. If you have questions about the canteen, insurance, gathering more volunteers or improving your meetings, they are probably answered in these sheets. We are also happy to provide the collection, and associated templates and pro-formas, on either CD or USB drive to your P&C. Printed sets of the Information Sheets are also available. Contact our office to request one of these formats.

Food safety supervisor course

Registrations are now open for Nutrition Australia's Food Safety Supervisor course. All school canteens must have a designated food safety supervisor who has completed recognised training such as this. The $220 course is tailored for school canteen staff and prepares them to oversee day to day operations and prevent and recognise food safety hazards. The full day course will run on September 1.

ParentACTion magazine out now

The term 3 edition of our free magazine - ParentACTion - will arrive in schools this week, or you can read it now online. Read how one P&C re-invented itself for the challenges of high school, find out what the Government is doing to improve school traffic, discover a new dyslexia resource, get some tips on engaging with your kids’ reading, celebrate with one of our executive members, and more!

Safe Schools Coalition

The National Safe Schools Coalition helps schools be safer and more inclusive for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, school staff and families and create an environment where everyone can be themselves. Joining Safe Schools is free and gives your school access to professional development for staff, resources for the whole school community, and advice. Is your school a member?

Alliance for Participatory Democracy

P&Cs are invited to the launch of the Canberra Alliance for Participatory Democracy at Radford College in Bruce on Sunday, September 13 at 1.30 pm. The Alliance aims to reinvigorate citizen engagement in democracy. Similar groups operate around the world and in other Australian cities. At the launch, there will be presentations about community engagement and the way these activities can enrich participating groups as well as the community as a whole. P&C associations are invited to become a member group in the new Alliance. Contact Robert Douglas for more.
