Listening to Tuggeranong
We want to know more about what parents see as the joys, difficulties and needs of public schools in Tuggeranong. So we will be holding our August General Meeting in Tuggeranong - the first stop on our ‘listening tour’ - and all parents are invited. It’s on Tuesday 28 August at the Centre for Innovation & Learning at Caroline Chisholm School (108 Hambidge Cres), starting at 7pm.
Please join us and share your experiences, views and ideas so that we can represent them in our regular discussions with the Education Minister and Education Directorate. Some local MLAs are planning to come so that they can listen too.
Please also help us spread the word so that we can hear from as many parents as possible. You can use this flyer/poster or our Facebook event.

Changes to buses
Transport Canberra have announced a draft new public transport network for 2019. Many schools will have dedicated school buses replaced with regular services.
Council encourages all parents to look at how the new network affects your family and provide feedback to the ACT Government during the consultation period. You can view the proposed services for each school. Feedback can be provided via the YourSay website. Council is preparing a submission on the changes and would also like to hear how your school and community will be affected (please email).
Council has had lengthy meetings with Transport Canberra. We are focusing on making sure that each high school’s Priority Enrolment Area is well serviced by public transport to the school. Our preference is for dedicated school buses, rather than regular route services. We are insistent that students should not have to transit through an interchange to get to their in-area high school. We have also asked for measures to increase student safety and confidence (particularly at interchanges and bus hubs) as well as hands-on education sessions, perhaps accompanying year six transition days to high schools, to help students feel more confident about using buses.

Our activities
Our office has been extremely busy of late. We have been talking to parents and P&Cs about changes to school buses and to school capacity calculations, and then advocating on your behalf to the ACT Government. We've written submissions representing your views on disability travel and the NDIS. Council listened to feedback from P&Cs at the last general meeting regarding standardised testing like NAPLAN. This feedback has been collated for a submission to the Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Youth Affairs inquiry into standardised testing in ACT Schools. We are providing feedback to the Education Directorate on proposed changes to the Education ACT, their Suspensions policy and more. And, as always, we have been helping you - our members - with your questions.
