P&Cs need to know...

Got P&C questions?

Come to our online Q&A session for P&C volunteers and ask us anything!

Drop in anytime between 12:30 and 1:30pm on Monday 15 August.

First, please register here.
Reminder: Financial controls

Just a reminder that all P&Cs must have in place adequate financial controls to protect their association from fraud. Although the P&C treasurer looks after the P&C's day to day finances, all members of the P&C committee have responsibility for proper use of association funds.

Internal controls are checks and mechanisms which help safeguard P&C assets and reduce the risk of errors or fraudulent activity. They need not be arduous to provide protection for everyone. It is essential to have basic financial controls documented in the association’s constitution or by-laws, and for these to be understood and adhered to. See our Treasurer's Handbook for more, but here are some basic internal controls which all P&Cs should have in place:
  • Bank accounts operated strictly as two to sign/operate including electronic transactions
  • Bank account signatories/operators are current committee members
  • Bank statement or account balance is sighted along with the treasurer's report at each P&C meeting (or once a term) so that committee members can see that the actual balance agrees with the reported position
  • Any cash received must be handled properly, and documented/counted by two people
  • P&C finances are audited/reviewed by an external person annually.
Do contact us if you are unsure.
Children's week grants
Small seeding grants are available to fund Children’s Week-related activities and events. Activities should  be held between October 10 and November 6, should increase awareness of the needs, interest, rights and achievements of children and/or young people, and promote community involvement and cooperation. This year there is a special focus on intergenerational activities and STEM-related events. Closes September 9.

Outdoor furniture
Felton Industries - who make a range of outdoor furniture and sun shades - are giving away up to $10,000 of their products! Simply upload a photo of an empty outdoor space that you would like to be filled with Felton outdoor furniture, select the furniture you would like and explain why you should win! Closes September 30.

Food services for disadvantaged
If your P&C provides support for disadvantaged or under-served members of your community via a food service, you could apply for $5000 worth of equipment and cash through the SilverChef Community Grants Program. Applications are taken in four rounds throughout the year.
Children's awards

Do you know someone who makes a difference for children and young people in the ACT?  Nominate them for a Children’s Week Award in one of several categories. Nominations close 11 September.

Council's August General Meeting

Come along to our August meeting to hear the outcomes of our parent survey and how we have advocated for parents at the education stakeholder roundtable. The roundtable, to be held early this month was something Council asked for - an opportunity to sit down with the Government, education leaders and teacher's union representatives to try to find ways of improving the current experience for everyone at our public schools as the pandemic and staff shortages continue to impact schools.

The meeting is online, Tuesday August 23, from 7-9pm. All welcome. Register to attend.

Raising respect

Are you interested in respect, gender equality and inclusion?
Raising Respect is a project to equip parents and carers when talking to their children and others about these topics. And they’re looking for parents and carers to help us design it.

This is not a call for experts! It’s a call for parents and carers who have questions, worries, ideas, or tips. They want to know what kinds of things parents and carers (of all genders) would like to see included in information sessions for the project.

They can talk with you in person, over the phone or online, one-on-one or in small groups. There are a number of $25 gift vouchers to recognise contributions of time up to 30 minutes (on a first come first served basis). If you’re interested please contact Merri via email or phone/text 0417 228 556.
Parent Webinar: career choices

A free webinar on Tuesday 9 August (4pm) from myfuture will look at how to best support young people to develop self-awareness to support their career goals; along with the unseen job market in the agriculture industry. Register.
