Effective P&C Workshops
From what the P&C is all about and your role in it, to the nitty-gritty of running meetings, recruiting volunteers, and meeting your P&C's legal obligations, this workshop is perfect for all office bearers. There will be time for questions and some brain-storming too!
There are two sessions:
PART 1: Roles, goals and responsibilities. Tuesday 21 July, 7-8pm, Via Zoom.
PART 2: Communications, meetings, volunteers & fundraising. Wed 22 July, 7-8:30pm (Zoom).

P&Cs as employers and canteen providers
For P&Cs which run small businesses such as canteens, there are always questions about employing staff and meeting your regulatory and legal obligations. This workshop focuses on this important area. It's on Tuesday 28 July, 7-8:30pm, Via Zoom.
Plus!  By popular demand! We've added a half hour discussion about reducing your canteen waste!

Grant writing
A practical session with tips and advice to help your P&C win grants, with special reference to the Supporting Parental Engagement Grants currently available. We'll also cover what grants can and can't be used for, and acquitting grant funds and your obligations. It's on Thursday 13 August, 7-9:30pm. Via Zoom.

Constitution Workshop
This workshop, scheduled for late last term, was postponed due to staff illness. A new date will be advised as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Grants to support parent engagement

The Education Directorate recently announced their Supporting Parental Engagement Grants to help support P&Cs and parent involvement and our schools. We would encourage all P&Cs to apply before October 30, for projects of up to $20,000.
In response to questions from our members, we can also advise:
  • The Directorate have now made the application form available as a PDF so that it is easier for committees, volunteers and school staff to work together on project ideas (final application still needs to be submitted via the online form).
  • The grants will be assessed by an independent panel using the criteria listed in the Guidelines.
  • P&Cs can make more than one submission (or just link multiple ideas into the one submission)
  • Come along to our Grant Writing workshop (above) for help and tips!

Grants for schools in disadvantaged communities

Schools Plus is offering funding of between $20,000 and $250,000 for projects that improve learning outcomes at schools with a value below 1000 on the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA - check values at Council will also contact P&Cs at those schools directly about this opportunity. Submit a simple Expression of Interest before 11 Sept to be matched with a donor.

Can we hold our fete this year?

We know that some P&Cs have put their fete plans ‘on hold’ and are now considering whether to go ahead with planning or postpone until next year.

The ACT Education Directorate has released a roadmap which outlines activities permitted in schools for each stage as restrictions are eased. During term 3, fundraising events can go ahead with numbers limited to those outlined in the appropriate stage of Canberra's Recovery Plan. Currently the ACT is in step 2.2 of the plan which allows up to 100 people to gather (4 square metres per person). The next stage (stage 3) will relax that number to 250 people. However, at the time of writing it, implementation of stage 3 has been delayed due to a number of new COVID cases in the ACT.
Larger gatherings, such as fetes, have been placed under ‘Future Considerations’ in both the Education Directorate and ACT Government’s roadmaps. The timing for these activities has not yet been determined and will depend on public health risk assessments. As we’ve seen, plans for easing restrictions can and do change.

Now may be the time to start thinking about other, smaller fundraisers or community events for your school.

Decision making in such uncertain times is really hard. Earlier in the year we put together some tips to help P&C committees make some of those hard decisions. Check back on our 'Decision making in uncertain times' item in this Council Communicator for a range of practical, financial and insurance considerations for planning and potentially cancelling events, many of which are still relevant as we continue to move through this pandemic.
In case you missed it...

Sharing expertise

At Council, we love hearing - and sharing - the amazing things that our member P&Cs do. It's a great way to learn, inspire, celebrate and save everyone having to reinvent the wheel. Check out past articles in the "At Our P&C..." series, including some great ideas to bring people together and engage parents.
