Recruiting new P&C members
Wondering how your P&C is going to fill all of its positions this year?
Here are some tips for recruiting volunteers:
- let everyone know the benefits of volunteering - the socialising, developing new skills, being involved in something worthwhile, making stronger connections with the school and staff, the way the school and kids benefit. The idea is to move away from 'we need your help' to a message of 'be part of something great!'
- be specific about the volunteer roles available - what is involved in the job, the skills needed and the time it usually takes to do it
- break down larger jobs into smaller roles
- make it possible for people to share larger tasks
- get out and be personal - encourage everyone on your committee to approach at least two other parents and tell them about what the P&C does, how it has been personally rewarding and what roles are available which might suit them
- check out our Information Sheet on recruiting and our brochure template which you can tailor for your P&C to let people know what you do.

Finishing up on the P&C?
If your role on the P&C is ending, it is important to equip your successor with the tools they need for the job. It will greatly improve the way your P&C runs if there are good handover notes. See our sample handover notes for Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers to adapt to suit your school. We also have an Information Sheet on helping new office bearers.

Essentials for volunteer managers
Volunteering and Contact ACT are running an ' Essentials for Volunteer Managers' workshop which would be of interest to many P&C office bearers. The workshop helps you look afresh and refocus on the way you attract, manage and recognise your volunteers. There is a cost, but the workshop comes highly recommended.
Offering training to your committee members can be a great way to make the position more attractive or give people something in return for the hours they give to your P&C. You may even wish to create a new position on your committee specifically to look after your volunteer needs - a 'volunteer co-ordinator' (maybe something like this), for whom this training would be perfect.

Access/quiet days
Marymead Autism Centre (contact via 6162 5862 or email) is supporting Canberra venues to introduce ‘Access Days’ - a block of time when families living with ASD or sensory related concerns can use the venue prior to the general public. It will be less busy, quieter, easier parking, dimmer lighting where possible and trained staff will be on hand to provide assistance. Click through to find out more. Registration is preferred in some cases. Some upcoming dates and venues:
