Notice to Test Organizations and Testers performing SNIA Emerald™ testing:
Updated and new Data Center Storage Test Specification and underlying SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Measurement Specification V2.1.1
On April 22, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released an update to the latest version of the Data Center Storage Test Specification and the underlying SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Measurement Specification. See Data Center Storage Version 1.0 Update.
With the April 22, 2016 update, all testing of new products and new models will now use SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Measurement Specification V2.1.1, December 2, 2015, along with Vdbench V5.04.03 or V5.04.05, and the new SNIA COM Test Data Set Generator software v1.17. For products/models already submitted or tests underway but not completed and submitted with ENERGY STAR V1.0 March 6, 2014, using SNIA Emerald™ version 2.0.2, testers can continue to use 2.0.2, only as outlined in the ENERGY STAR specification sections 3.6.1 and 3.6.2.
These changes further align with testing experiences and evolving storage components. A tester’s effort may find nominal time-savings for a few of the procedural steps. These revisions do not result in any major structural or policy changes within the program requirements. For questions, contact the EPA or SNIA.
Upcoming SNIA Green Storage Stakeholder Meetings and New Industry Work
SNIA is working on new versions of the SNIA Emerald™ test specifications. The planned major new addition is the inclusion of NAS system testing based on SPEC SFS2014 Workload toolset. The test methodology has been validated and the Green Storage TWG is writing the specification. Mid-year and into the fall, the EPA and SNIA will foster industry stakeholder meetings to review the ENERGY STAR Specification that will reference the SNIA Emerald™ specification. At the October 2016 SNIA Technical Symposium in Colorado Springs, SNIA will hold a training workshop for testers, as well as kick-off the launch of NAS testing, whereby test results can be submitted and posted with the EPA.
SNIA is planning to host a ½ day virtual workshop during the July 2016 Technical Symposium for testers to share best practices, learned lessons, and discuss their experiences with the V2.1.1 test tools and test results.
