Derbyshire Welcomes Captain
Kevin Parker

A Message to the Friends of
Derbyshire Machine & Tool Company:

I would like to express my appreciation to all that helped us here at Derbyshire Machine & Tool Company this past year in providing the critical equipment and services needed by the Navy and its shipyards to keep our Navy and Nation strong. It has been an exciting past year at Derbyshire hosting a number of high level visitors from the Navy, shipyards, U.S. Congressional and City Council offices. Our visitors were all very interested in getting to know us better to support the type of essential manufacturing we provide to build the great ships our Navy and Nation needs to protect our vital national interests.

One of the great highlights of this year was our participation with the commissioning of the U.S.S. Murtha LPD 26 in Philadelphia this past October.  As a member of the commissioning committee, I would like to personally thank all of you who helped make this such a successful commissioning and positive experience for the crew of the U.S.S. Murtha before they take this ship into harm's way in the defense of our Nation. Comments I received back from the crew confirmed how appreciative they were of our community, and companies came together to insure the crew had a great Philadelphia experience. The crew was seen actively engaged out in our community and also invited the Flyers and Eagles Cheerleaders to perform on the ship. Philadelphia is a great Navy town and proved it during the visit of the U.S.S. Murtha.

Derbyshire was fortunate to have Captain Kevin Parker and officers of the U.S.S. Murtha visit our company where we were also covered by Fox29.  During his visit, he made his introduction and statement to the city from our factory floor. Derbyshire was also highlighted in a CBS radio interview by Brad Segall along with Captain Parker, Jim Donahue – Patriot Direct, and myself to further inform the public about the traditions and activities surrounding a major event like a commissioning and Derbyshire’s part in it.  This as well as the many visits leaders from government and industry we enjoyed this year have confirmed to me that all of your efforts at Derbyshire are well recognized and appreciated at the highest levels.

Sincerely,

Paul Trenholm
President

Commissioning Week

Thanks for Subscribing

During the week that the ship visited Philadelphia, there were a number of opportunities and occasions where the crew had the chance to meet with various groups from the city including the Eagles Cheerleaders who came aboard and performed a dance routine.  Next the Well Deck was cleared and turned into a street hockey arena where many former Flyers including Ron Hextall and Bernie Parent played an exhibition game for the crew.

The team at Derbyshire wants to extend a hearty 'thank you' to all of our friends at Derbyshire. You made our efforts shine, and we want to keep that going! If you're not a regular just yet, visit our website to get the latest updates on all of our new projects and accomplishments.

DERBYSHIRE WELCOMES SPECIAL VISITORS

Deputy Chief of Staff PA1, Eriade D. Williams, Esq.

USN Commander, Captain Dana F. Simon

Councilman Derek S. Green, Esq.

Deputy Chief of Staff of Congressman Brady Visit Derbyshire
Captain Dana F. Simon Visits Derbyshire

Derbyshire was honored to welcome Eriade D. Williams, Esq., Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director to our facility October 31st accompanied by her staff assistant Zach Rosen.  Eriade has been working the defense issues for Congressman Brady who is a long standing member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC). Eriade has met with Derbyshire and our Pennsylvania defense contingents over the past couple of years when we call on Congress with the Submarine Industrial Base Council (SIBC) which Derbyshire is a Co-lead for the state, the Aircraft Carrier Industrial Base Coalition (ACIBC), as well as our major Naval Combatants shipbuilding programs. She has been a great supporter, helping our companies get their message through regarding the importance of supporting the DOD budgets for Naval ships for the Nation’s defense, integrity of the industrial base, and economic impact on their constituents in their districts.

Derbyshire was most pleased to welcome Captain Dana F. Simon as the new DCMA Navy Special Emphasis Operation who took over for the retired Captain McGinnis. He was accompanied by company residents DCMA Joe Paine and Scott Hamilton.  The Captain comes with both industry, shipyard and Navy quality program experience and very interested in working with Derbyshire to achieve our shared goals of improving production and response time in support of vital fleet mission operations.  Derbyshire enjoys a status as a DCMA 500 Contractor as one of the highest contracted facilities qualified for Level 1 and Nuclear Naval work.

Councilman Green
Visits Derbyshire

Philadelphia Regional DOD Government & Industry Development Initiative

Derbyshire was pleased to welcome  Philadelphia Councilman -at-Large Derek S. Green, Esq. to our facility August 12 accompanied by Greg Davis NFP and Stephanie Phelps – Blackbook LLC. Councilman Green has been active in the city’s housing and economic development committees and has been selected by Philadelphia Metro and Daily News as one of the new young rising political stars in the city. The Councilman was interested in finding a surviving  manufacturer still operating and thriving in the city as so  many other companies have left the region or gone out of  business. He is most interested in economic and employment growth in the city and working with us to determine how the city could support our efforts to continue the successful operation of this facility.  As Derbyshire continues to grow this business, we would be very interested in government support for training of new employees and similar apprenticeship programs which help build, and retain the high-end jobs needed for a healthy regional economy.

Robert Smith pictured above is the Director of the Dept. of the Navy’s (DON) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program - Washington D.C. He was our keynote speaker at last summer's Defense Transition Initiative. The Regional DOD Government & Industry Development Initiative held in Norristown and was an effort to bring more DOD investment to the Philadelphia regional companies serving the defense industry. Derbyshire and Joseph Welsh – Vice President of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Delaware Valley Chapter, joined with Philadelphia Works city agency to introduce the SE Pennsylvania Defense Transition Initiative to the NDIA membership companies and the regional defense industry.   This meeting brought together all the key defense stakeholders in the region both Navy and Defense Prime Contractors including:

  • Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) engineering group in the Navy Yard
  • Naval inventory Point Control DLA Procurement Center
  • Department of the Navy SBIR/STTR – Office of Naval Research (ORN)

USS Murtha Commissioning

An LPD Class ship is the “Swiss Army Knife” of the Navy, these ships are a key element of the Navy's ability to deployment of the combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. The versatile LPD 26 will be equipped with a well deck capable of embarking and debarking landing craft, air cushion, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV), and future means by which Marines are delivered ashore. The ship's capabilities are further enhanced by its flight deck and hangar which can operate CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters and the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft (MV-22). The ship encompasses over 23,000 square feet of vehicle storage and is equipped to transport a landing force of up to 800 Marines and their equipment. All of which were on display for the pubic to tour aboard the ship that day.  If you have never seen a formal Navy commissioning of a Naval warship you should put it on your bucket list.  It has been the Navy’s tradition since 1775 to “Bring to Life” a ship marking the entrance of a Man-of War into the Naval forces of her nation.  Philadelphia was picked as the venue to hold this historic event for this latest ship to join the fleet.  John P. Murtha was a former Marine officer, elected to the Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District, in 1974. Murtha served as chairman and ranking minority member of the House Appropriations Committee as a major advocate for the Naval shipbuilding industry.

A number of our nation's highest ranking leaders from government to industry spoke passionately to the crowd about John Murtha as they knew him as an officer and fellow congressman including those who worked closest to him including Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Congressman John Brady (Philadelphia district 1). These ships are not only deployed in the defense roles but also for humanitarian missions. As Brian Cuccious , President of the shipbuilder HII Ingalls announced  This morning, USS Mesa Verde LPD 19, is heading to Haiti to aid in the hurricane relief effort”. John Murtha’s daughter Donna Murtha spoke emotionally about all the people that have taken part in “Making a Difference” in bringing this great ship about. She then gave the order to bring the ship to life signaling the flag to be raised, engines turned on, radars and lights, and for the crew to “Man your Ship”, where the crew and Marines immediately ran up the gang planks and took their stations standing shoulder to shoulder ringing the deck of the ship for all to see.  This magnificent display of power, technology, and capability of a young diverse group of our servicemen and women from every corner of our country demonstrated in no uncertain terms what America can do.   I was personally proud to serve on this commissioning committee and that Derbyshire has manufactured so many of the mission critical components utilized on this ship and to know that we too do our part in the words of John P. Murtha (and this ships slogan), to "Make a Difference."
