Great news! Vodafone have informed us today that we have been shortlisted for their Rural Open Sure Signal Programme. For those of you that haven't seen our earlier newsletters, this is a scheme whereby some people in the village agree to host mini booster transmitters so that anyone in Chillaton can get a Vodafone signal. This should guarantee a phone signal across most of the village, (although you would have to move to Vodafone). However, the deal is not quite done. The next step is for Vodafone engineers to come and survey the village more closely to make sure that it is technically viable. This should happen during December. According to their letter, if they decide that it isn't the best solution, they may consider upgrading the local mast instead. Thank you to all our volunteers!
Devon County Council is carrying out a consultation exercise called Tough Choices.  This is asking the public to say what cuts they would make so that the County Council achieves its savings targets.

One of the proposals directly affects Chillaton.  They want to stop salting the road from Tavistock to Lifton.  Before salting started about three years ago, we regularly had accidents around the village when the road was icy.  If you want to find out more, please go to www.toughchoices.co.uk  or to get straight to the issues like road maintenance, including salting, click on

It took two visits by the road sweeper to get it right, but we have finally managed to get an extra clean to remove the leaves that pile up each autumn and force pedestrians out into the carriageway, as they approach the village centre from Marlow Crescent. That should now happen every autumn, as this is now a priority area.

The road sweeper also had a go at the grit and gravel that's been on the edge of the road into the village from Tavistock and hasn't been swept for years.  A lot's been removed, but there's more to go.  The next regular clean is scheduled for the first week in December.
