RSM Summer Mission Trips
While RUMC is a “place of community and faith,” it is also an outpost for God’s people to go out in service. During the month of June, our church sent out 65 different students and adults on mission experiences across the world! In those four weeks, we went to Matasia, Kenya; Gatlinburg, TN; and Lake Charles, LA to work alongside pastors and churches serving the lost and the least.

The first week of June saw 13 high school seniors and graduates travel more than 20 hours to Divine Providence Training Center (DPTC) in Kenya. Our group helped with work projects around Camp Chemi-Chemi and saw the new water bottling system at work. The team visited with several alumni from DPTC and even revisited the local girls’ high school. One of the group’s favorite traditions is to attend church with Pastors Paul and Martha and visit Strong Tower Orphanage, which they run. The group wrapped up their time there with a trip to Masai Mara and a breathtaking safari.

At the end of June each year, the youth take two trips: a middle school and a high school mission trip. 25 middle school students and adult leaders travelled to the towns of Gatlinburg and Seymour, TN to help local churches serve their communities. The group split into smaller teams and assisted in landscaping of a local elementary school, served in a thrift store that gives back to the community, and painted a local church. For fun, they spent a day in Pigeon Forge, riding go-karts, and much more.

That same week, we also sent a team of 30 high schoolers and chaperones to help with hurricane recovery in Lake Charles, LA. In August 2020, Hurricane Laura, a category four hurricane and the most destructive one in Louisiana history, hit Lake Charles. Just six weeks later as recovery was in full swing, Hurricane Delta cut a path right through Lake Charles as well. The city was devastated. Our group of missionaries carried the good news of Jesus Christ (as well as some willing hearts) to the people there. They were able to help paint five classrooms for a local elementary school and paint several rooms for our host church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Their entire church was damaged in the storms. We also helped them run Vacation Bible School, as they were able to have it at their church for the first time in three years. Not to mention, 29 people went “crabbing” for the first time. It involves string and a turkey neck!

A huge thanks to all our adult volunteers who led and served alongside our students this month. Thanks to Chad Miller, Jennifer Scott, Tiffany Stone, Ryan Harrison, Jesse Adams, Rebecca Hart, and Beth Cayce for answering God’s call and responding with your time, talents, gifts, and service. YOU are what makes this church so special. Your faith and commitment are what makes it a place of community and faith!
