Meet our exciting new mental health team, hear what our 2020 Matrics are up to and more!

The first few months of the year have flown past!

With our brand new intake of 55 skills development students, 99 Educentre learners, 9 GED students, 5 Second Chance learners and our three social enterprises up and running; all whilst keeping safe and implementing all the COVID-19 restrictions and regulations - we have been keeping busy!

Meet our new Psycho-social Team

The past year, more than ever, we realised the huge need for holistic health and the importance of looking after the mental health of the youth we serve. Thanks to some longstanding partnerships with dedicated funders as well as your support of our COVID campaign, we have recently been able to appoint both a senior psychosocial project manager who is a qualified social worker, as well as a qualified social work caseworker. Later in the year we will also add an auxiliary social worker to the team. We are excited to be able to offer more dedicated support and care to the community. Meet the new team here:

Lyndale Nyaguwa Psycho-social Manager

Lyndale is has a Bachelor of Social Work and Master’s in Clinical Social Work. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Lyndale has had a passion for young people. “I feel revitalised when I work with young people and it is effortless to apply myself in recognising and walking healing journeys with them.”

Isabelle Souza Social Worker

Originally from Brazil, Isabelle has been living in South Africa for the past 12 years. Isabelle says “After graduating as a Social Worker at the University of Cape Town, I started working in the field of Child Protection. This work experience exposed me to different communities and realities in South Africa and just increased my passion for working towards community development and especially the counselling of children.”

Our 2020 Matrics succeed during the pandemic!

We are excited to share with you that our 2020 matriculants achieved 7 bachelor passes (1 pass with two distinctions) and 2 diploma passes! We continue to walk a journey with our learners to assist those that are taking their supplementary exams by enrolling them into our Sozo Second Chance programme. We are so proud of the resilience and determination each of them have shown throughout 2020 and continue to show despite the challenges and circumstances they have faced.

Check out these short interviews with some of the 2020 cohort and how Sozo helped them over their time at high school:

“This tough time showed me that under pressure I can do what I wanted to do. And with that, Sozo also helped us because they offered us online classes when we couldn’t go to school. We had the least time to complete our school modules. Sozo helped us close the gap a bit and that’s why I did so well in certain subjects.” Exaucé Kabeya

Thank you for your continued support and keep your eyes peeled for our exciting 10 year anniversary celebrations coming soon!
