"BEGINNINGS is important to our family"

With already a full family, 2 years ago we decided to follow a lifelong calling to make a difference for a child in need. Our adventure took us to Ukraine where we adopted a precious little 4-year-old boy who had never heard one word and therefore didn’t know how to speak. There is no question in our minds, God sent us to this little boy because he is destined for GREAT things. When we arrived back in Charlotte with a little guy who couldn’t hear and couldn’t speak, we were at a complete loss of what to do next. We had absolutely zero experience with hearing impairment and yet we knew we had to learn fast. We quickly sought out doctors, friends, and other professionals to ask for advice. This is how we were first connected to BEGINNINGS for Parents of Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. I called them and learned that a parent educator would happily come to our house and explain the ropes to us. What a huge blessing! She showed up with all kinds of resources in hand and we sat down for several hours during which she explained how to navigate the hearing impairment path. She convinced us to go through the IEP process with the public schools, which I never would have done without her encouragement. I had no idea our school system had the most fabulous hearing impaired preschool class at Montclaire Elementary. Our parent educator happily came with us to all our IEP meetings to serve as an advocate for us and our Brayden was accepted into the class at Montclaire. Fast forward a year and Brayden is hearing and speaking now at a 2- and 3-year-old level. Wow! He is the happiest child on earth and we owe all this to our “village,” which includes the many caring staff at BEGINNINGS.

Please support BEGINNINGS, and join their team. The organization is so vital to the parents of our community with children who have hearing loss.

To think we almost left Brayden at an orphanage because we were scared of a child with a hearing impairment. Honestly, the kind and caring people we have met along the way, which includes BEGINNINGS, have filled our hearts with more joy than we ever thought possible. It makes us believe we can change the world one child at a time. Child number two is in process, by the way. This time the little guy is from China and he also has a hearing related issue. We can’t wait!
