We’ve got a little over a week left of scary movie season and while Dune and James Bond have taken over many PDX screens, the historic Academy Theater has all the classic frights you need. Pair it with a Montavilla meal or a spooky walk through nearby Mt. Tabor and you’ve got the makings of a perfect Halloween-y night. Here are 3 awesome scary movies the week has in store at the Academy. All for just $5!
Brian DePalma directs our favorite prom queen Sissy Spacek and John Travolta in this creepy classic. PNW connection…the evil mom is played by Piper Laurie who goes on to be the delightfully cold-hearted Catherine Martell in the WA-filmed Twin Peaks. Playing now thru Oct 28th at 4:15 and 6:40 pm.
Another Stephen King adaptation. Another bloodfest. Stanley Kubrick, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Redrum combine for this psychological thriller that’ll make you think twice about stepping into an elevator. Ahhh. The perfect horror film to watch as the rains descend upon PDX to keep us cooped up indoors for the next half year. As many Oregonians know, the exterior shots of the movie’s Overlook Hotel were filmed at Mt. Hood’s Timberline Lodge. And Frank Lloyd Wright fans can look for his inspiration in some of the hotel interiors. Playing now thru Oct 28th at 4 and 9 pm.
This one is a sequel to the same-named 1992 film. But you don’t really need to have seen the first one to enjoy this one, which is co-written by mastermind Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and offers a timely update to the scary story. Beautiful cinematography & score. An incredibly moving cut-out puppet show sprinkled throughout. This movie is much more poignant than your average horror film and might leave you with some unexpected goosebumps. Playing now thru Oct 28th at 7:15 pm with additional weekend screenings at 1:50 pm.
