IWiM is dedicated to building an international community for all women in the mining and metals sector.
This is an exciting week for women in mining everywhere!
BHP Billiton announced on Wednesday 19th of October that is seeks gender parity by 2025
We congratulate BHP for making this bold target and we believe it will set a new benchmark and example for others to follow. It will signal to younger generation and to female professionals in the industry that things are shifting and diversity & inclusion is now part of the strategy.

Women in Mining UK launched their toolkit to help mining companies solve the issue of gender parity in the sector on Tuesday. It is a great document and we applaud them for the initiative.
WIM (UK) and EY Mentoring Kit

August and September continued to be busy with advancements on several projects as well as networking with WIM associations. WIM& WiN Saskatchewan held a successful "Mine Your Potential" conference featuring a dozen speakers focused on educating and empowering women in the industry while WIMWA held their inspirational annual conference (video).

The Women on Mining Boards webinar programme is still available in recordings format.
We are currently working on our board-ready database. If you wish to sit on a board or do already contact us. The IFC is currently collecting resumes from qualified women and will advance the ideas of having more women on boards at a sustainability seminar they are hosting at the end of the year.

The IWiM SpeakUP project will have several IWiM members participating in a panel discussion at The Mining Show 2016 in Dubai in October. If you are interested in being considered for speaking opportunities, please contact us, as we hope to have speaking opportunities for IWiM members of all levels of experience and areas of expertise. We have a special forum on our website for speaking opportunities so do register with us.

Attending a conference or an event?  We invite you to communicate your upcoming engagments with the IWiM community to connect with other members and volunteers attending various mining events/social gatherings: The aim of the hashtag is to bring awareness and join our members (who use social media) at mining meet ups that may be happening in their area.  Our Twitter Handle is @IntWIMCommunity and FB page link
 
We are aware that not everyone is willing to share on an open forum like LinkedIn on topics like harrassment, careers and much more in case it might affect their future prospects so we have started setting up forums on our website by topic and will add more.

OCTOBER

Peruvian Lita Calenzani has spent 30 years in the mining industry and says if she had to live her live over and choose where to work, she would choose mining again. She took the opportunities that were offered to her and moved from roles traditionally held by women in mining firms in Peru to “male roles”. Boosted by the confidence and belief in her good work that she was given by the company, Lita took on new challenges while raising three young girls. She believes the thing you must have is self-confidence and the ability to find a solution at all times. For those starting out she says you must like what you do. Click here to read her interview

SEPTEMBER

Marianne HarveyHer advice is to be confident and not be afraid to speak up because a little bit of self-promotion goes a long way as demonstrated by our male peers, who've dominated mining in the past.

Marianne is an Australian geologist that is pushing at the boundaries as she prepares for an all-female science voyage with Antarctica as the backdrop.  Come December she'll spend 20 days on a boat headed to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Project.   Click here to read her interview.

Zandile Buthelesi“If you are somewhere that does not serve your purpose then you leave and you go and find it somewhere else” 


  South African, Zandile Buthelesi, is General Manager Projects at African Exploration Mining and Finance Corp.  A passionate advocate of women in mining, she believes that for young women starting up, you need roles models and someone to hold your hand, to understand that this path is walked on and that it is something that you can do.  She wants to encourage women to network and to take control of their careers, because she says no one else is going to do it for you.   Click here to read her interview.

Awards, Schlarships and WIM Group Updates

AWARDS
The 2016 Women in Resources National Awards (WIRNA) were announced September 1 at a dinner in Adelaide that attracted high achievers in minerals and energy from across Australia. See winners. Nominations for 2017 are now open. View the CME website for information.

SCHOLARSHIPS & PROGRAMS
In September, WIMBC promoted Minerva Foundation's Leadership in Transition program.  The Leadership in Transition program (LIT) is an intensive six-month program (one full day/month) that brings together women from a variety of backgrounds who are ready to transition into something meaningful, financially viable and takes into account all of their brilliance, leadership skills and resources.

WIMWA are delighted to continue scholarships Melbourne University Ethical Leadership Program. For further information contact: wimwa_events@iinet.net.au

WIMWA is now accepting applications for the 2017 mentoring program.  The program is tailored to suit women working in the mining and resources sector in Western Australia with almost 400 mentees completing the program to date.  View applications.
