Dear Foundation Friends and Partners—

While Buffalo is 1,200 miles away from New Orleans, the distance does not quell my anger and grief when I consider the suffering and loss that is being felt by the families and friends of those killed or wounded this past Saturday. Those harmed could have very well been our friends or loved ones right here in our region, just following their weekly routine of grocery shopping for their family, a chore that should not carry the burden of fear or danger. With all evidence pointing to the victims being viciously targeted because they were Black, this overt evil warrants condemnation by every American.

Our Foundation serves a region that is 44% People of Color and is headquartered in a City that is 60% Black. I can only imagine the terror and outrage that this incident stirs in the hearts of so many of our friends and neighbors right here in the Greater New Orleans region, especially those who are Black. Saturday’s incident is directly linked to the ideology of White Supremacy, which also must be condemned.

Our hearts ache for the families and community in Buffalo, for our Black friends and neighbors right here in Greater New Orleans and for all others who, because of their identity, live in fear that they could be next.

At the Greater New Orleans Foundation, we created the Greater Together Fund for Racial Equity following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery in 2020 with a goal of supporting Black-led organizations working to end racial inequities and to build wealth for African American families.

We’ve obviously got so much more work to do to create a New Orleans and an America where all of us can be safe and thrive, and that must remain our North Star.
