The Shelter Scoop

March 2021 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

Kitten season has officially arrived at PAWS! This week, we not only welcomed 2 kittens found in a car at Lion Country Kia, but one of our brand new cats, Luna Moona, gave birth to 4 kittens. She was with us for less than 24 hours when the kittens made their appearance, so the timing couldn’t have been better. Luna Moona and her, soon to be named, Constellation Kittens are doing well so far in their foster home. In addition, we brought in Luna Moona’s housemate, Nubby (so named because of her adorable nubbin tail) and her 1 kitten, Chubby.

Below you’ll find some updates for those who have been away for a while due to COVID. It’s to help you feel a bit more “in the loop” about what’s going on at PAWS. We can’t wait for our volunteers to slowly return as more and more of us are fully vaccinated.

What's Happening at the Shelter

Pet Pantry Upgrades

Our Pet Pantry has slowly but surely been taking over our lobby. This is a good thing, but we definitely need another storage solution. So, we’re actively working on getting necessary permitting and seeking a shed that will suit our needs. It’s very exciting that this small project has grown so much in the past year.

Cardboard Cat Carriers

In an effort to cut back on the amount of disinfecting we have to do on a daily basis (the cat carriers and dog crates pile up really quickly), we are testing out various new cardboard carriers. These carriers are also wonderful because they provide a hidey spot while cats/kittens are still up for adoption, then help with their transition into a new home. It’s always helpful for our cats to have something with a familiar smell when they leave us.

New Couplers

Dog volunteers may notice our dogs sporting a new style of couplers. Our current couplers have to be custom-made by sewists with heavy-duty machines, and we’ve had trouble keeping them supplied consistently, so we’re exploring mass-produced options. The new couplers are technically made for coupling two types of collars together, but they can also serve as a fail-safe for coupling our collars and harnesses together. There are bright yellow and bright orange versions hanging in the kitchen in addition to the great, helpful couplers handmade by our volunteers. We hope these will be helpful!

Dog Behavioral Team

This team continues to expand and serve our volunteers, fosters, and adopters. Our Coordinators recently met to reorganize the structure of the team in order to increase our effectiveness. We added a brand new section to the team for educational purposes and I’m proud to share that we’ve held our first 2 rescue-wide Zoom training sessions on “Advanced Dog Handling.” We had participants from Pets Come First, Huntingdon County Humane Society, and Central PA Humane Society. We hope there will be many more collaborative efforts together in the future.

Reopening Plans

We’re not quite to the point where we are actively planning our reopening. However, the feedback we received via the Volunteer COVID Response survey was incredibly helpful and quite encouraging. We’ll be sure to share updates as we have them!

Volunteer of the Month: Lauren Lewis

This month's Volunteer of the Month is Lauren Lewis, who is a cat volunteer. Congratulations Lauren! Check out the blog to learn more about Lauren here.
The Volunteer of the Month gets a blog feature on our website and their very own parking space! THIS JUST IN: The Volunteer of the Month also gets a naming opportunity for a new PAWS animal. The Volunteer of the Month can be anyone who logged hours during the previous month or a volunteer who has logged 1,500 hours. The volunteer will be contacted via email. If a youth volunteer wins, their parent or guardian will be able to use the parking space. Make sure to log your hours!

Upcoming Events

It’s time for our PJ Party! Here is our link with more information on how you can participate. It’s certain to be a great time!

We also have just a few special event PJ pants left to order. They’re just $25 and very cute. Sizes Medium and Large still available, email to order a pair before they disappear.

Happy Updates

Love following up on our furry friends? Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook page.  Check out the Happy Tails 2020 album on Facebook.

Rescue Story

Lenore came to PAWS with her roommate Edgar and three kitties. They were rescued by the Humane Officer from poor living conditions, and they were pretty stinky. Lenore got a spa day at the groomer to clean up her luscious locks, and now she's waiting for her forever home!

Adoption Updates

O'Malley and Ryder enjoy snoozing together in their forever home.
Gus, now Kimbrough, enjoys sunning himself and watching wildlife in his forever home.
Macy was adopted after 462 days at PAWS! While she is still shy, she's coming around to how wonderful a forever home can be.
Porter, formerly known as Rip, was adopted recently by a PAWS volunteer.

Happy March Birthday!
