The Shelter Scoop
June 2016 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

It's finally summer here at PAWS and we're enjoying the nice weather.  Cats get to watch the birds from their window perches and the dogs are enjoying not having to go on soggy Spring walks.
Thanks to everyone who voted in our poll about volunteer events.  We've looked at the results and are planning accordingly.  We've got a lot of great things planned for this summer, from fun nights with the Spikes to our Volunteer Picnic.  Be sure to check out what to mark on your calendars and stay tuned for more events (Fire Pit nights, Game nights, etc) that we'll schedule later.  Also, while not a PAWS Event, there will be a local screening of the movie, The Champions.  The Champions is an inspirational story about the pit bulls rescued from the brutal fighting ring of former Atlanta Falcon’s star quarterback Michael Vick, and the organizations who worked hard to save them.  The movie will play at the UEC Theater over by PAWS and the Mall Tuesday, June 21st.  More information and to buy tickets go here: https://www.tugg.com/events/106397.

I hope you enjoy this month's Volunteer Newsletter!

Volunteer of the Month!

Starting in July, we're implementing a new volunteer award.  We will be looking at Volgisitics records and randomly choosing a Volunteer of the Month.  The Volunteer of the Month will get a blog feature on our website and their very own parking space!  The Volunteer of the Month can be anyone who logged hours during the previous month.  The volunteer will be contacted via email.  If a youth volunteer wins, their parent or guardian will be able to use the parking space.  Make sure to log your hours!

Meredith in Foster!

We know how much all of the volunteers loved hanging out with Meredith while she was living at PAWS, so we figured we'd share a brief update from her foster.

"Meredith is doing very well in her foster home! She did have a couple of young, bully moments when she first came to the house. This was especially so with the other Diva (my english bulldog) that rules the house, but after a couple of days and some good “uh-uh’s” she learned very quickly to appreciate everyone’s boundaries. She LOVES all the toys and bones, and loves to pull each one of them out of our dog toy basket and throw them around the house. She’s also best friends with our cat that thinks he’s a dog, and the play regularly. Meredith is currently working on not jumping up on people, so if she says hi and she doesn’t jump much don’t think she’s not excited to see you! Once she’s eventually all tuckered out, she likes to pass out on the couch and snuggle (per usual Meredith)."

Catherine on Vacation!

Catherine is going on vacation for two weeks.  She will be gone from Thursday, June 17th until Saturday, July 2nd.  Any urgent issues can be sent to Lisa (lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org).  If you have questions about your Volgistics account, logging volunteer hours, volunteer events, or anything that can wait to be answered, she'll get back to you when she returns.

We met our new best friend in May!

21 cats were successfully adopted in May, bringing the year total to 166 placements
33 dogs were successfully adopted in May, bringing the year total to 122 placements

Our Sweethearts Alexa and Henry love to sleep with my daughter's stuffed animals! Thanks, PAWS, for taking care of them until they could be adopted by us. We love them so much!

Maverick is now Bruce Wayne.  He is doing wonderful, he's an absolute delight. Everyone that meets him falls in love with him! He has only had one accident in the house. He does act up when he's around other dogs (especially females) so I try to keep him on a leash in those instances. His vet visit went well, they said he was of perfect health.  I could go on and on about how well he is fitting in. He is everything I had hoped for and more. He is a good boy who just wants human affection.
I just wanted to send you an update on Mia [known as Annalise Marie at PAWS]. Over the last few weeks, it seems that Mia has finally gotten comfortable in our home. She's quite the snuggler, she's almost always on someone's lap. Her and Westley [her feline sibling] are also getting along much better now too. They love to play with each other and eventually once they both get tired, they'll curl up together.
Kona is fantastic! She is just what our family needed after losing our last dog Suzie (also a PAWS dog)in January. Milo our 10 yr old American Bulldog was so depressed.
We are working on obedience training and she is a very smart girl so it is going well!  Milo was skeptical for this young, energetic pup at first but he has warmed up to Kona and they LOVE to lay around on the couch together as you will see from the pics. She also LOVES playing with tennis balls, running around in the back yard and getting a bath.
She has adjusted very well and takes Milos lead on most things. Kona loves having a big brother!

Happy June Birthday!
