The Shelter Scoop

April 2021 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

The big news this month is that we’re almost to Volunteer Appreciation Week! It’s one of the greatest weeks of the year because we have the best volunteers! This year we have some special things planned that we really hope you’ll enjoy. In addition to those fun volunteer events, I’m going to continue to share updates and happenings around the shelter since you all seemed to like it last month.

What's Happening at the Shelter

Pet Pantry Upgrades

The process of procuring our Pet Pantry is really moving along. We were able to get complete funding for the project! We have nearly everything needed for the permit, which will be submitted early next week. Fingers crossed for a quick approval after that!

Flying Dogs

We are so excited that tonight, we are meeting our newest Freedom Fences arrivals at the airport tonight! PAWS is lucky enough to have support from No Dog Left Behind to more easily move dogs from South Carolina to Central PA. Last time they came by van, this time it’s first class all the way (okay it’s actually a small plane and they’ll be in crates, but it’s still really cool)! Pictures to be shared soon.

Large Cat Intake

About a week ago we were contacted to assist with 25 cats in need. They will be coming from a single home and Karen and the Cat Intake Team are scheduling them to come in over a period of time and moving them into one of our colony rooms as they’re ready. We anticipate the first group will be coming in this weekend. I am very proud that our amazing team, from intake, to care, to adoptions,  is able to help so many cats in such a significant way and short amount of time.

Dr. John Thomas VET Fund

Several of you have asked for an update on the VET Fund. The goal is to get it launched at the end of this month. Once it is, I’ll be sharing information with you all! Until then, we’re not yet accepting applications.

Pajama Party Update

As you probably saw, our Pajama Party did really well. With your help and our supporters’ help, we were able to raise almost $10,000 more than our goal. It was also a lot of fun. I hope if you attended you enjoyed it. If you didn’t get to attend, here is a link to one of our favorite videos from the event. And one more just because it’s so fun and cute!

Volunteer of the Month: Wendy Roe

This month's Volunteer of the Month is Wendy Roe, who is a cat volunteer. Congratulations Wendy! Check out the blog to learn more about Wendy here.
The Volunteer of the Month gets a blog feature on our website and their very own parking space! THIS JUST IN: The Volunteer of the Month also gets a naming opportunity for a new PAWS animal. The Volunteer of the Month can be anyone who logged hours during the previous month or a volunteer who has logged 1,500 hours. The volunteer will be contacted via email. If a youth volunteer wins, their parent or guardian will be able to use the parking space. Make sure to log your hours!

Upcoming Volunteer Appreciation Week Happenings

Send us your photos!

We want to create a really fun video for you, but need your help. If you’d like to be included in the video, send us a photo of you in your younger years with a pet or animal and a photo of you now with a pet or animal. You can email them to We can’t wait to see what you send in!

Doggie Yoga

Spend your lunch hour with us and a couple of PAWS dogs! On Tuesday, April 20, from 12-12:45 we’ll be doing doggie yoga outside (weather permitting). We’ll meet in the lower playard at the back of the PAWS campus. Be sure to bring a mat if you have one and dress comfortably. This is for people of all ages and skill levels. You can RSVP to

Volunteer Bingo

We are holding a special volunteer-only, completely free bingo on Friday, April 23 starting at 5:30 pm. You can login as early as 5 PM and chat with fellow volunteers until we get started at 5:30. We will play 5 total games and have 2 raffles. The whole event should take about 1.5 hours. To RSVP and/or to be entered in either raffle, again email You do not need to be present to be entered into the raffles.

Happy Updates

Love following up on our furry friends? Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook page.  Check out the Happy Tails 2020 album on Facebook.
"We adopted Donovan (renamed Finn, now answering to Buster Brown) in October. He has become our champion snuggler and blanket buddy. Buster’s favorite place is right up against his dad taking a nap or under the covers on a rainy day. We recently discovered that he likes to hide little treats to find and chew on later. He also loves a good walk and to smell something new. Sometimes he even stands up to get a better look."
"We adopted Tease on Friday. We renamed her Olive and she is awesome. We adore her! Thank you so much! She purrs and purrs as soon as someone pets her. We all have fun together playing with toys."
Here's Sugar (formerly Tammy) with her new canine sibling.

Happy April Birthday!
