The Shelter Scoop
June 2017 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

We’re Hiring!

Two of our kennel assistants, Stephanie and Carrie, will be moving this summer, and they will be missed! Since we are losing them, we are looking to hire two new kennel assistants for morning shifts. If you are interested in applying for one of these positions, please send your resumé to Lisa at lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org.

2,000 Hours Volunteer Reward: Donna Clapper!

Donna has logged over 2,000 hours with PAWS, so she has earned a newsletter feature! We are grateful for all the time she has spent helping the dogs here at PAWS. Here's what she had to say about her time with PAWS so far and her life outside of the shelter:

How long have you been at PAWS?
I started July 2013.

What's your favorite thing about PAWS?
My favorite thing about PAWS is the way cats and dogs are treated with so much love and respect, working to make them adoptable, and finding the best homes for each of them.

What's your favorite thing to do at PAWS?
I love to hang out and love the dogs!

What are your favorite non-PAWS hobbies?
I like to transport dogs for various organizations. I especially love transporting seniors giving them a chance to live the rest of their lives in a loving home.

How long have you lived in Centre County?
I lived here for 7 years then moved to Philadelphia for 3 years. Have been back for 40 years.

What's your favorite movie?
I love all genres of movies. So I have favorites in each type. One of my top loved movies is Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.

Thanks for all your hard work Donna! The dogs and cats give you a woof-and-meow salute for caring for them so much!

I hope you enjoy this month's Volunteer Newsletter!

Website Meeting

There will be a meeting on June 22nd at 5:30 in the basement of PAWS regarding our new website. We have exciting news to share about progress on our new Web site and we want volunteer input before moving forward.  The new Web site uses new technology and is designed to be "mobile friendly" or look good and work well on tablets, iPads, cell phones, etc. For those of you who update our Web site, there will probably be some changes in how updates are processed and done. This and more will be covered so come prepared with suggestions and questions. The Web site has already gone through some cursory reviews by both the Publicity Committee and the IT Committee so we're ready for feedback from all PAWS Volunteers.

What:  PAWS New Web Site Overview

Who: Lead by  Dave Abler, Bob Conn and Heather Mannion

Why: To discuss changes, showcase some new technology and to get volunteer feedback

Where: Centre County PAWS Basement

When: Thursday, June 22 at 5:30

Summer Fire Pit Night

Come out Friday, June 30, for our next Fire Pit of the season.  Fire will be lit at 7:30 PM. Come make S'mores and meet other volunteers. Feel free to bring other snacks or beverages!

Seamstresses Needed!

We need assistance sewing together bed covers for our dog beds to help streamline the laundering process. They are being cut by young student volunteers and will be ready for pick up to sew after July 27. Please let Megan know if you can help and she'll compile a list to give to the woman with the plan.

Kitten Days of Summer

Our Kitten Days of Summer promotion is in full swing! During the month of June, any kitten younger than one year old will have its adoption fee waived. Cats older than one year can be also be welcomed into your home for only $5.

Heartwarming Adoption Update:

Heart was adopted on Christmas Day, and recently her furever family checked in to tell us how she is doing!

"Heart is doing wonderful as our new family member. There have been no issues at all. It's as if she's lived with us since she's been a kitten. Her first day here (Christmas Day), I kept her in a large dog crate with her litter box. One because we had family coming in and out, I didn't want her to run off. Two, so she could get used to the litter here. Not even 2 hours later, I let her out to roam again, and it's been easy ever since. She's had no accidents anywhere either. Such a sweet kitty.

She knows her boundaries too. My daughter just turned four and sometimes hugs a little too much. Heart just simply pulls away. With me, we play. So I get a few scratches here and there, she acts like she's biting, but never bites down. My daughter tries to play, Heart just sits there and does not get rough with her."

We met our new best friend in May!

24 cats were successfully adopted in May, bringing the year total to 159 placements
31 dogs were successfully adopted in Maybringing the year total to 127 placements

Adoption Follow Ups!

Here is our little mountain goat (Monty the dog) and our 18-year-old cat, Eli. The cats like to sit where Monty is; we think he might think he is a cat now too.
Wallaby is doing great. He's going crazy with his toys and is eating well.

Charlie has blossomed since being adopted! He's become very friendly and playful. He wouldn't play at shelter. Now he stays in the yard, comes when hes called, sleeps on the couch, loves children, and is just a wonderful boy.

Love following up on our furry friends?  Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook.  Check out the Happy Endings photo album on Facebook.
