The Shelter Scoop
October 2016 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

It took a while, but fall is finally here.  This means dog shifts are getting cooler and darker.  Make sure to dress warmly and grab a flashlight before heading out!

We said good-bye to Ben as our medical assistant, but he assures us he'll still stop by for the occasional volunteer shift.  Make sure to welcome Colin and Kelsey if you see either of them.  Because we have two medical assistants now, that means we'll have someone in every day except Monday.

Be sure to check out all of the events coming up.  We have quite a few events and volunteer classes scheduled, with descriptions below.  Check your schedules to see if you can come to any or all of them.

I hope you enjoy this month's Volunteer Newsletter!

Volunteer of the Month!

This Month's Volunteer of the Month is Maura Shea, a cat care volunteer.  Congratulations Maura (pictured here with her daughter Claire)!  Check out the blog to learn more about Maura here: https://goo.gl/LrvxuZ

The Volunteer of the Month gets a blog feature on our website and their very own parking space!  The Volunteer of the Month can be anyone who logged hours during the previous month or a Volunteer who has logged more than 4,000 hours.  The volunteer will be contacted via email.  If a youth volunteer wins, their parent or guardian will be able to use the parking space.  Make sure to log your hours!

Help Wanted

Cat Care Training Scheduling

As you remember, to sign up for training you need to get in touch with a volunteer who signs people up for classes.  We need someone to help us answer the cat training emails.  This is a perfect job for those looking to be more involved from home.  However you need to be able to check the email and respond to emails a few times a week.

Please contact Lisa (lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org) or Catherine (catherine@centrecountypaws.org) if you are interested or would like more information!

Thank-You Notes

We're looking for someone to help us write thank-you notes.  This can be done from home.  Please contact Lisa (lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org) or Catherine (catherine@centrecountypaws.org) if you are interested or would like more information!

Caught You Cards

Have you been Caught?  We've added new prizes for Caught You Cards!  Caught You Cards are a great way to show other volunteers or staff that you appreciate them!  Did someone help you out on a shift or do something that you really appreciate?  Write them a Caught You Card!  Caught You Cards can be put in the Kitty Mailbox on top of the Admin Mailboxes or given to the person directly.  Prizes for Caught You Cards are as follows:

Adoption Follow Ups!

Starlight  has learned to sit in a bike basket and enjoy the ride!

Izzy (formerly known as Oreo) has been a puurrrfect addition to our home. She is super friendly and sweet, and greets us when we come home from work. Izzy loves to snuggle up next to us when we are sitting on the couch, or laying in bed. She really has the best temperament (lol) and we are so happy to have her as part of our family. Izzy's favorite things are drinking water out of human glasses (even the ones her parents are drinking out of) and chasing around her catnip-stuffed toys.  Thanks PAWS for matching us up with this cute little furball.

Raven and Jeffrey, adopted by my mom and dad. They are finally settling in
Magnus is doing well. He gets along with all the family members.  He tries to play with the cats and they are not real sure of him. There is times were my one Tom cat plays tag with Magnus and they chase each other around the house.  He is becoming protective of my older dog Shelby.
He watches out for her when we are outside doesn't want to get too far away from her. I believe he knows he is loved, he is a lap dog and loves taking naps in your lap. We don't mind… He has come to know that mommy is the one that takes him out at night so he now sleeps with me and my husband and Shelby. I told Jason we need a king size bed to fit us in it. He just laughs.
Sofie's doing great!

She and her big sister Raven (10 year old, GSD/lab mix) have been adjusting to the new pack, and the biggest hurdle has been when spunky Sophie wants to play, and Raven is not in the mood :). She loves playing with Charlie (cat, PAWS alum), too - but she needs to learn how to play with him gently (although Charlie does have many "safe spaces" to get to if he needs a break from her).

The two-legged kids are loving taking care of her, too.  The two year old especially loves giving her dinner in the evening and being "in charge" of letting her out of her crate when we get home…

She's definitely full of energy, and she's a jumper (like, cat-like jumper).....my husband takes her and Raven on long runs most mornings before work.  The two of us try to get home every day at lunch to let her out, run her around a bit, and then she gets a special treat when she goes back in the crate for the afternoon.  She goes for runs and hikes in the woods with the family most weekends, and we try and keep her out of the crate as much as possible - really just when we aren't home (although she wasn't completely secured in her crate one afternoon....she got out, but only damage was to a remote...no accidents or other destruction, so hopefully we are on the right track).
(the one is a picture of my 6 year old reading to Sophie during her "nap" time.  :) ).

We just love her to death and are so glad she's a part of the Jackson Pack!.
Love following up on our furry friends?  Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook.  Check out the Happy Endings photo album on Facebook here: (https://www.facebook.com/CentreCountyPAWS/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1005665976141939).
