The Shelter Scoop
November 2016 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

It's cooling down and getting dark earlier.  With the cooler weather comes icy and snowy roads.  Use caution when deciding whether or not you can make it in for a volunteer shift.  If you cannot make it in, please remove yourself from Volgistics.  This is important for shift leaders to know how many people will be on their shift, but also for us to decide whether or not we should open for the day.  Please do not call in to the PAWS lines, we won't get the message soon enough to forward to shift leaders.

We're excited to announce that from the 21st of November until the 21st of December we'll be waiving the adoption fees for ALL cats and kittens.  We know how much love cats can provide so we're calling this promotion our "Share The Love" event.

I hope you enjoy this month's Volunteer Newsletter!

This Month's Volunteer of the Month is Marcia Holsinger, a cat care volunteer.  Congratulations Marcia!  Check out the blog to learn more about Marcia here: https://goo.gl/o08o5x

Please email Catherine (catherine@centrecountypaws.org) with what you would like to bring.  Not a great baker? Don't have time to make something?  We'd still love for you to come and vote for your favorites!  We hope to see you there!

A Great Fur Ball

October saw another great Fur Ball.  We started the night with some adoptable dogs in costumes greeting attendees.  Centre County PAWS honored Katherine Spicer, the young lady who raised over $10,000 for PAWS.  With a great selection of silent and live auction pieces and generous donations from attendees, the Fur Ball raised more than forty thousand dollars($40,000!).  We were pleased to see so many of our volunteers there and hope to see more in 2017!

Educational Classes

We'll be doing recurring costumer interaction training for dealing with potentially difficult visitors, a regularly recurring "how to" for cat and dog medication, and a regularly recurring dog body-language course. We hope you enjoyed the classes this fall and look in next month's newsletter from some that are coming up in 2017!

Help Wanted

Cat Care Training Scheduling

As you may remember, to sign up for training you need to get in touch with a volunteer who signs people up for classes.  We need someone to help us answer the cat training emails.  This is a perfect job for those looking to be more involved from home.  However you need to be able to check the email and respond to emails a few times a week.

Please contact Lisa (lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org) or Catherine (catherine@centrecountypaws.org) if you are interested or would like more information!

Group Volunteering

We're looking for someone to help us with our group volunteer days.  We have groups contact PAWS to do community service around the facility and we like to try to accommodate as many groups as possible.  Currently we're doing two days a month on weeknight evenings.  One of our volunteers who's been helping over-see groups needs to step down and we're going to need some help in 2017. Please contact Catherine (catherine@centrecountypaws.org) if you are interested or would like more information!

Caught You Cards

Have you been Caught?  We've added new prizes for Caught You Cards!  Caught You Cards are a great way to show other volunteers or staff that you appreciate them!  Did someone help you out on a shift or do something that you really appreciate?  Write them a Caught You Card!  Caught You Cards can be put in the Kitty Mailbox on top of the Admin Mailboxes or given to the person directly.  Prizes for Caught You Cards are as follows:

     1. Candy Bar
     3. Magnet
     5. $10 Gift Card or Treat Pouch (New Prize)
     10. Volunteer T-Shirt
     15. Staff Day Off
     20. Volunteer Sweatshirt (New Prize)

Help PAWS Alum Corky!

PAWS Alum Corky is having his paw amputated to improve long term health and quality of life.  His adopter reached out to PAWS for us to share his GoFundMe page. Any value that is raised above and beyond what is required for his surgery and recovery will be donated to PAWS to help cover other surgical needs for current dogs.  Read more about his journey, share the page, and donate at the link below.

Adoption Follow Ups!

Nero is doing so much better. The trainer works with him every other week. He is wearing an anti-anxiety collar and has homeo-pet anxiety drops in his water. It seems to help. He successfully tailgated the Penn State/Ohio state game with no tantrums and was great with the people there. This past weekend he drove to camp Lohikan with me for a cancer benefit. He did well in the hotel room -- didn't have any accidents and didn't bark!  So we're definitely making progress. He is getting groomed on Monday so I'll have to let you know how that goes…

In all he's doing well.

Reba is doing very well.  We enjoy watching her grow and enjoy every moment with her.   She spends a lot of time playing with our youngest son, she and him love digging holes and playing in the yard.  They even  take naps together.  She enjoyed going on our camping adventures, she loves to be around people and interact.  She is an attention getter.  Everything went well during her vet visit.  We enjoy every moment with her.
Iggy (now Ichabod) is doing really well. He adjusted immediately to our house and has been a great addition!  He loves to look outside in the backyard for squirrels and chipmunks and loves playing with hair ties. He's the sweetest boy ever and loves to cuddle and sleep on fluffy blankets.  We are so happy to have him!
Alfie (Professor Cat Face) and Ziggy (Wolfgang) are doing beautifully! Yes, they are still closely bonded but are both very confident and independent, too. Their sweet personalities continue to blossom and they have lost much of their shyness. They have bonded well with Henry (Mickey Mouse) who acted like the Welcome Wagon from the day they arrived. Alfie loves his paper bags and boxes while Ziggy enjoys playing tag, peek-a-boo, and watching the wildlife from his spot on the chaise lounge. We love our furry children and must admit to spoiling them but isn’t that what you’re supposed to do with cats?!
Love following up on our furry friends?  Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook.  Check out the Happy Endings photo album on Facebook here: (https://www.facebook.com/CentreCountyPAWS/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1005665976141939).
