Your Monthly PAWS Volunteer Newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>

Getting back to our normal newsletter routine, we're going to start off this newsletter with a staff bio of Ben Hamby, our Medical Assistant.

My name is Ben. I've been working at PAWS for a few years now. Many of you may have already met me in my previous position here as the former evening kennel assistant. I recently made the transition into the medical assistant position and am now learning how to care for the PAWS animals in a new kind of way. As a kennel assistant I got to see how the animals personalities came out and how they gained trust through the interactions with volunteers and staff. Now I see a different type of progress that is made "behind the scenes" through the various medical treatments the animals receive and get to watch them regain and/or maintain their health. I'm glad that I can continue to help the animals and meet more of the volunteers involved in making this shelter such a great place.

Pet Partners Updates!

Duff has been doing great! I was working on simple commands with him like down, stay and leave it. As well as working on the commands, we're working with him on crate training. He definitely does not like it at all, but is starting to get used to it. I'm using cheese and that really helps.  We have been working on introducing him to more dogs and, once the initial excitement wears off, he is able to walk nicely with another dog, so I think that he definitely can be placed with another dog.
Reuben is very energetic, so he would benefit from living with an active family who would walk and play with him often.  Reuben went to the park a couple weeks ago, and he was pretty good in the car. He didn't react poorly to any  people or dogs at the park.  He knows sit, paw, and down and is very smart. Hayley is working on crate training with Reuben as he has some separation anxiety
Buster is such a different dog from even a month ago.  He seems to be greeting people more often when they enter a M&G, he wags his tail, licks faces, and has begun to lead the walks. When Abby stops to roll around in the grass, he barks at her! Buster knows sit and come but is still terrified of doors opening, loud noises and groups of people passing him.   Abby - she is as lovable as ever.  She does try to hog attention, and she knows commands for sit, shake, lay down, stay and come.  Abby is going to be getting ACL surgery 10/9 so make sure to give her love.

New PAWS Grass Play Yard

Have you noticed a new fenced area being built at PAWS?  Thanks to the generous donation of board member, Bill First, our dogs will be able to romp and run around on grass.  Make sure to thank Bill if you see him!  Rules for usage of the play yard are posted on the fence.  To prevent public use, it will be locked.  Shift leaders will unlock at the beginning of the shift for PAWS use!

Volunteers Wanted!

Handy Volunteer:  We're looking for someone to help out around PAWS with some of the repair work.  We're always in need of someone to help look at our dryers, help with basic plumbing, replace our air filters, and help fix kennel doors.  If you're interested, please email Lisa at lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org.
Front Desk Volunteers:  Are you interested in helping PAWS but maybe dog walking or cat care is too much?  We’re always looking for more front desk volunteers! Duties include:
  • Welcoming all volunteers and visitors to PAWS warmly, answering questions and directing visitors appropriately.
  • Accept donations from visitors, give receipts for in kind donations, and thank donors on behalf of PAWS.
  • Answer phones and provide accurate information to callers.
  • Answer phones and take information on dog and cat surrenders and lost/found dogs and cats.
  • Help with administrative PAWS projects as needed.
  • Work closely with other volunteers on duty and the Director of Operations to ensure that all information given out is completely accurate and in line with all PAWS policies and guidelines.
If interested please email Elaine Cassin at e_cassin@comcast.net

Pet Adoption Updates!

We love getting updates from our Alumni.  There's nothing more heartwarming than seeing former PAWS animals thriving in their forever homes!  Here are some of our favorite updates.
"Batman and Elsa have become best buddies. They oftentimes share the same windowsill"
Bruno is doing great! He and Mia (Pretty Mae at PAWS) are very lovey dovey with each other. We are so happy to have him in our family.  He is completely housebroken now, and let's us know when he needs to go outside... If you did not know we haven't had him his entire life, you would never know. He is definitely ours and we his. He thinks he is a lap dog and gets to cuddle with us on the couch at night, only when he is called up.
"We adopted Ollie a while back. She is doing great! She's a very sweet cat that purrs like a motorcycle!! She can be that loud"
"Hi PAWS friends. This is Deacon. Here's a photo of me and my new best bud Csonka enjoying a walk on the Pine Creek Rail Trail. I have not been a lick of trouble, but am sharing lots of licks with my new Ma. I think they love me!!!"
