3,000 Hour Volunteer Reward: Kathe Craig

Kathe Craig recently logged over 3,000 hours volunteering with PAWS, which earns her a feature in our newsletter and our blog! You can find our blog here: https://goo.gl/28Sgvf

Thanks to Kathe for all the ways you have helped Centre County PAWS!

How long have you been at PAWS?
9 years. My first volunteer assignment was at the door of Pet Extravaganza with Ginger Vierck, who was a relatively new volunteer, too.

What's your favorite thing about PAWS? It’s hard to pick only one favorite thing about PAWS. It’s my second home. People care about the animals and about one another. We all do our part to match the dogs and cats to their forever homes.

What's your favorite thing to do at PAWS? I’ve done many things at PAWS, from editing Paw Prints, the now retired print newsletter, cleaning and acting as a Floor Volunteer on the Cat Side, and even assisting at a few spay/neuter clinics. I guess the one I like the most is fostering kittens. Fosters help us save more animals, and the kittens keep me and my older cats young.

What are your favorite non-PAWS hobbies? I take tap dancing and Broadway Jazz at Kennedy Dance Centre and occasionally ride a horse named Toby at Jodon’s Slab Cabin Farm.

What's your favorite book? Not sure I have a favorite book, but my two favorite authors are my father, Joseph F. Hannan and Stephen King.

Where's your favorite place to vacation? I love Seaside Park, NJ (“down the shore") any time of the year. My family vacationed there as often as we could. My sister Eileen and I still love to go there, though we are long overdue for a visit.

Seeking RSVP Members

Several of our PAWS volunteers are also members of the Retired & Seniors Volunteer Program. RSVP of Centre County has been connecting active adult volunteers, 55 and better, with volunteer opportunities at 70 non-profit agencies throughout Centre County since 1985. If you are a volunteer who is over 55, please consider joining RSVP. The hours you log at PAWS are reported to RSVP and are helpful for gaining more program funding for Seniors.

RSVP also holds a luncheon for its members each year, and some of our PAWS RSVP members would like to get a group of PAWS volunteers together to attend this event. If you are interested in joining RSVP, or if you are a member who is interested in going to the luncheon with the PAWS group, please contact Elaine Cassin at e_cassin@comcast.net for more information.

Hurricane Relief Efforts

During the Month of September, PAWS organized not one but TWO transports from Freedom Fences in South Carolina. We wanted to help get as many shelter dogs as we could out of the area before the hurricane hit so that displaced pets would be able to go to shelters close to home. In just two weeks, we rescued over 50 dogs from the South and from local areas.

The public responded in generous fashion by coming in and adopting at record rates, so almost all of those dogs have been adopted already!

Thank you to all our volunteers and staff who put in extra time to help take care of these dogs and find them forever homes. We couldn't have done this without the help of our wonderful PAWS community!

Exciting Update on Craig Morgan!

Last month we featured Craig Morgan, PAWS Basement Supervisor, in our Shelter Scoop. Well, we have some exciting news to share: Craig has been adopted, and now he has a couch, a dog, and a mom of his very own! We wish him a long and happy life with his new family. Thanks to everyone who has visited Craig during his stay at PAWS!

Adoption Follow Ups

Love following up on our furry friends? Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook page.  Check out the Happy Endings photo album on Facebook.
"Duchess (formerly Sweet Pea) is doing very well! She's a very happy old girl :) We have a lot of fun with her. She has a HUGE appetite and loves to eat everything. The only time she barks is when food is out :p We're happy to have her and have really enjoyed getting to know her. She has a really sweet and goofy personality."

"This is one of the few quiet moments that Happy and Dolly (formerly Kami and Lizzie) have. They are such playmates. Everything is good."

Moby Dick (formerly Swiffy) is settling in nicely with his new family! They have been working on his training so well that his tendency to guard resources is practically non-existent. He loves his family and they love him!
"Darwin (Ed Sheeran) and Izzy (Hen) are fun, playful cats that have really taken to each other! Darwin has become super social since being home and loves to sleep right up against my face. Izzy is just as sassy as the first time I met her and definitely keeps Darwin in line! "

Happy October Birthday!
