The Shelter Scoop

August 2021 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

I hope that you and your family are doing well. We’re continuing our important work at PAWS with your help, our dedicated volunteers. I’ve found that the public is incredibly appreciative of our extended open hours, continue to need our Pet Pantry, and are generally looking to us as an important resource. This month, we’ve been able to help 2 more dogs in need of veterinary care through administration of the Dr. John Thomas VET Fund. One of those dogs, Pepper, needed an eye removed, but also needed rides to and from her home in Philipsburg to the vet in Centre Hall. A PAWS volunteer offered to help immediately and has become Pepper’s personal chauffeur. Since her eye removal, she’s the happiest little girl. This is the type of thing our volunteers do again and again - go above and beyond for the animals of our community and the people who love them. Thank you!

Around the Shelter

Gold Medalist Fosters

Our fosters could always be described as olympians for the amount of time and work they put into caring for their fosters. Now, though, we have a literal gold medalist foster!

Everybody’s best friend is finally ready for his forever home. Spread the word that our Angel Boy is available!

Kittens, Kittens, and more Kittens

Our fosters continue to respond to the dozens of requests for help with kittens. Last night we received a call about a kitten who was injured and needed immediate veterinary attention. We named him Xolo, since we are on our “X” orphaned kitten litter. He underwent emergency surgery last night and is doing amazingly well! Before he went off to his foster home, he was hard at work with us.

Masking Update

A few weeks back we made an update to our masking policy on the dog side, which allowed each shift to choose whether masks could be optional on their shift. Since then we have continued to monitor the number of cases in our area and the recommendations put forward by the CDC, and unfortunately the situation has continued to worsen. In order to keep our community safe while we fight this new and nasty version of COVID, PAWS has also made the decision to reinstate mandatory masking for everyone while inside PAWS. Masking is still not necessary outside, but if you’re in the building you will need to be masked. This is not a change for the cat side or front desk since those areas were still continuing to mask. We understand this is especially hard and inconvenient for dog walking volunteers in this heat, so we thank you for bearing with us. We encourage you to get vaccinated if you can and have not yet. It will help move us closer to the date when we can all be unmasked together.

Rainbow Bridge

We had two very special canine alumni pass away this past month. First was Quig, who could barely even walk when he first arrived at PAWS. Then, we lost Comet at age 14.5. Those of you who knew Comet knew how unique he was. Thank you for providing these incredible dogs the opportunity to live as cherished family members.

Happy Updates

Love following up on our furry friends? Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook page.
"On August 12, 2020 I brought Dolly home for the first time. I didn't officially adopt her until August 28th, but I consider the 12th her gotcha day.
I honestly can't imagine my life without her in it. I've even come to love her snoring! She loves going on hikes, and car rides are her favorite. Dolly is such a snuggle bug and she just wants to be right next to me for cuddles and scratches as much as possible. Dolly has some arthritis in her legs but she doesn't let that slow her down, and our vet has prescribed some meds to help her. Other than that she is in great health!
She is such a happy pup and I am so thankful to PAWS for bringing us together!"
“Bran Buds (now Cabbage) has been settling in well at our house, it as if he was the king of our apartment for quite some time. He loves being around us, walking beside us, laying in the cutest ways (his favorite is belly up) and laying in his favorite spot (perched on a window sill in the morning to watch birds).  Again thank you so much and we are so happy to have a fur baby in our home.”

"Brownie celebrated his 10th anniversary of being adopted!  Brownie was adopted on 8/9/2011, and was later joined by his human brother - they’re obviously a perfect pair!"

Happy August Birthday!
